Chapter 70 - The Flock of Hyenas

Three unmarked black SUVs and two county sheriff cruisers tore through the smashed gate, kicking up gravel and mud.

They did not arrive with sirens blaring; they arrived with the cold, deliberate precision of a federal strike team.

The vehicles slid to a halt directly behind the moving truck, effectively boxing in the church vans and blocking the only exit.

Clara turned around, her eyes widening with triumphant madness as she recognized the sheriff’s star on the lead cruiser door.

"Sheriff Miller!" she shouted, waving her hands wildly as if she had just been rescued from a burning building.

"Thank God you’re here, Sheriff! My daughter is trespassing and threatening the church elders with fabricated documents!"

"Arrest her immediately and help us clear the house so we can begin the youth mission retreat!"

The driver’s door of the lead SUV opened, but it was not Sheriff Miller who stepped out into the freezing mountain air.

It was Thomas Vance, my grandfather’s chief estate attorney, wearing a dark trench coat and carrying an aluminum legal briefcase.

Behind him stepped out two men in dark windbreakers with yellow letters across their backs: FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.

Beside them walked State Police Captain Mercer, a man who had zero ties to Clara’s suburban church circle.

Clara took a step backward on the porch steps, her heel catching on the wet timber and nearly sending her sprawling into the flowerbeds.

"Thomas?" she stammered, her voice shaking violently.

"What is this circus? Where is Sheriff Miller? He promised me he would oversee the eviction personally!"

"Sheriff Miller was suspended without pay at six o'clock this morning, Clara," Thomas said, his voice echoing with absolute finality.

"He is currently sitting in a holding cell at the state barracks answering questions regarding twenty-four thousand dollars in undeclared church donations."

A horrified shriek tore through the church crowd as Elder Stevens dropped his cardboard box, spilling packing tape across the mud.

Pastor Luke took three hurried steps away from Clara, his bible trembling in his frail hands as if it were about to burst into flames.

"Thomas, this is a family misunderstanding!" Clara pleaded, her face twisting into a hideous mask of panic.

"Arthur wanted me to have the lake! I have the deed right here in my hand!"

Thomas didn't even look at the paper she was waving frantically in the air.

He walked straight past her, climbed the porch steps, and handed me the black leather binder he carried beneath his arm.

"The forensic audit is complete, Riley," Thomas whispered, looking at me with tired, triumphant eyes.

"The trap is completely sprung."
