Chapter 40 - The Midnight Bell

Seventy-two hours later.
Zurich, Switzerland. The private vaults of the *Banque Privée de Genève*, buried four stories beneath the cold cobblestone streets of the Old Town.
The room smelled of polished steel, filtered ozone, and unimaginable wealth. An elderly Swiss vault master in an immaculate tuxedo bowed silently, placed Box 404 onto the mahogany viewing table, turned his dual brass master keys, and withdrew, closing the eight-ton vault door behind him.
Only Sarah Vance and I remained in the silent, soundproof chamber.
My hands were completely steady as I inserted Helen’s brass key into the final lock. With a heavy, oiled click, the steel lid released.
Sarah leaned in, her federal badge dangling from her neck, her breath catching in her throat.
Inside Box 404, there were no gold bars. There were no bearer bonds. There were no diamonds.
Inside lay a single, velvet-lined jeweler’s box, an audio cassette tape dated October 14, 1994, and an official, original birth certificate from the Canton of Zurich.
I opened the birth certificate first.
The mother listed was not Evelyn Vance.
The mother listed was Clara Vance.
The father listed was completely redacted with heavy black state wax.
And the child’s name, registered on the twenty-second day of October, 1994:
*Riley Vance.*
My vision blurred. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. My lungs collapsed as if all the oxygen had been vacuumed from the vault.
"Riley?" Sarah whispered, her face going stark white as she read the names over my shoulder. "That... that's impossible. Evelyn gave birth to you in Spokane. We verified the hospital records..."
"Evelyn didn't give birth to me," I gasped, my voice trembling so violently I could barely form words. "Evelyn took me. Helen made her take me."
I reached into the box with shaking fingers, taking out the vintage cassette tape, and inserted it into the small tape player resting on the bank's mahogany desk. I pressed *Play*.
The tape hissed with vintage static, followed by the deep, unmistakable, razor-sharp voice of Helen Vance, recorded nearly thirty years ago:
*"Riley, my darling.*
*If you are listening to this, Clara is dead. And you have survived the crucible.*
*I could not tell you the truth while she lived. Clara was a monster, but she gave birth to the truest heir this family has ever seen. I stole you from her clinic in Zurich the night you were born, and I gave you to Evelyn to raise, knowing Evelyn’s sickening vanity would keep you safe in the light where Clara’s syndicate could never touch you.*
*You are not the granddaughter of this dynasty, Riley.*
*You are Clara’s daughter.*
*And the man who fathered you... the man whose name is sealed under that black wax... he didn't die forty years ago either.*
*He is sitting in the private terminal at Zurich International Airport right now, waiting for Box 404 to be opened.*
*Look behind you, my child."*
A cold metallic click sounded directly behind my ear.
I didn't move.
In the reflection of the polished steel vault wall, Special Agent Sarah Vance was not looking at the documents anymore.
May you like
She was looking at me, her federal credentials tossed onto the floor, the barrel of her silenced service weapon pressed dead center against the base of my skull.
"Don't turn around, little cousin," Sarah whispered into the cold steel air. "My father would like to have a word with his daughter."
