Chapter 18 - The Smear Campaign

When a narcissist loses their kingdom, they do not surrender; they salt the earth so no one else can harvest it.

Deprived of her church status, her developer backer, and her legal options, Evelyn took to the internet.

On Friday morning, my phone began vibrating continuously on the nightstand. Friends from college, former consulting clients, and neighbors from all over North Idaho were sending me links to a viral video posted on Facebook and TikTok.

It was Evelyn.

She had dressed in threadbare clothes, sitting in a dimly lit, chaotic living room with framed photos of our deceased family members strategically arranged behind her. With tears streaming down her pale, powdered cheeks, she delivered an eleven-minute masterclass in psychological manipulation.

*"My name is Evelyn Vance,"* she wept into the camera. *"And I am begging for your prayers. My eldest daughter, Riley, whom I raised with every sacrifice a mother could make, has joined forces with corrupt federal officials to leave me homeless and destitute. She forged deed transfers to seize her grandmother’s sacred memorial home—a home intended to be a refuge for battered women and orphans. Now, she is threatening to have me locked away in federal prison because I dared to ask for my mother’s wedding ring."*

The video was a tour de force of calculated falsehoods, blending religious martyrdom with toxic victimhood. And the internet, as always, devoured it without question.

Within six hours, the video had over two million views.

The comments were a cesspool of vitriol:

*“How can a daughter do this to her own mother?!”*

*“Evicting her from the family lake house? Cold-hearted evil!”*

*“Someone need to teach this Riley Vance a lesson!”*

By midday, my business email was inundated with death threats. My consulting firm’s Google page was hit with hundreds of one-star reviews. Strangers were posting satellite images of my lake house on public forums, encouraging people to drive by and “show this monster what true justice looks like.”

I stood in my living room, watching a white pickup truck creep past the front gate, its horn blaring aggressively before speeding off, kicking up dust against my cedars.

The legal battle had been won. The criminal battle was underway. But Evelyn was waging a war of terror, turning the mindless mob into an operational weapon.
