Chapter 4 - The Black Book Of Sins

I stepped forward out of the shadows, the leather soles of my shoes clicking sharply against the slick tile floor.

“Ashley,” I spoke her name in a tone that was so quiet, so devoid of human emotion, that the humid air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Ashley froze instantly, the wine glass hovering halfway to her parted lips.

She turned her head slowly, her eyes widening into massive saucers of absolute disbelief.

“D-Daniel?” she gasped, her voice cracking as all the smug arrogance drained from her features.

Emily flinched at the sound of my voice and spun around so fast that she lost her balance against the edge of the sink.

The heavy cast-iron pan in her hands slipped from her slick grip and crashed onto the concrete floor with a deafening, metallic roar.

Dirty water splashed across Ashley’s designer leather shoes, but my sister didn't even notice.

Emily stared at me, her chest heaving, tears carving clean trails through the grime on her pale, sunken cheeks.

“Daniel?” she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror, shame, and utter disbelief.

“Is it... is it really you?”

I ignored my sister entirely as I closed the distance between Emily and me in three long strides.

I did not care about the filthy grease, the foul-smelling dishwater, or the soaked apron she wore.

I pulled Emily violently into my arms, pressing her fragile, shaking frame against my custom suit with all the protective fury in my body.

She buried her face into my neck and broke down into uncontrollable, gut-wrenching sobs that shook her entire body.

“I’m sorry... I’m so sorry, Daniel...” she wept hysterically, clutching my lapels with her raw, bleeding hands.

“I tried to be strong... I tried to manage everything like you asked... but they told me you hated me... they said I was a burden to you...”

“Shh, look at me, Emily,” I murmured, my voice cracking with intense emotion as I gently cupped her bruised face.

“You are the queen of this house, you have never been a burden, and no one will ever lay a finger on you again.”

Ashley finally found her voice, stepping back toward the exit with an anxious, nervous laugh.

“Daniel! Oh my god, you’re back early! What a wonderful surprise!” she stammered, waving her hands defensively.

“Listen, this isn't what it looks like at all! Emily insisted on helping the catering staff! We told her to rest, but she’s just so stubborn—”

“Shut your mouth,” I said, not even turning my head to look at her.

Ashley snapped her jaws shut, visibly trembling as she realized the lethal rage burning behind my eyes.

“Daniel, really, don't be dramatic,” Ashley tried again, her voice squeaking with nervous desperation.

“Mother and I were just trying to keep the house running smoothly while you were gone! We did everything out of love for you!”

I slowly reached into the interior pocket of my suit jacket.

Ashley’s eyes followed my hand, expecting me to pull out a phone, a checkbook, or perhaps the jewelry box she thought I might have brought.

Instead, I pulled out a thick, black leather-bound folder embossed with the gold seal of a private forensic investigation firm.

For the past six months, anomalous transactions had been pinging my corporate security algorithms.

I had hired the most ruthless forensic accountants and private detectives in the country to silently trace every single dollar leaving my accounts.

I had intended to review these files quietly in my home office over the weekend.

Now, the truth was going to be weaponized in the most brutal, public way imaginable.

“Do you know what this is, Ashley?” I asked, holding the folder up before her eyes.

She swallowed hard, shaking her head slowly in terror.

“This is the complete forensic audit of every bank account, every shell company, and every credit card you and Mother have touched over the last three years.”

“It contains forged signatures on property deeds, unauthorized wire transfers totaling eleven million dollars, and video surveillance of your husband purchasing luxury yachts with my corporate payroll funds.”

Ashley’s face turned completely white, her lips trembling so violently she couldn't form words.

“Take off your apron, Emily,” I said softly, turning my attention back to my weeping wife.

I gently untied the filthy strings behind her neck and tossed the soaked cloth directly into Ashley’s face.

“Come with me, my love,” I took Emily’s red, blistered hand in mine.

“It is time to introduce the real owner of this estate to our guests.”
