Chapter 8 - Clearing the Air

Three days later, the autumn sunlight streamed gently through the bay windows of the Vance family living room. The oppressive cloud that had hung over the house for ten long months had finally evaporated, replaced by the quiet, comforting hum of normalcy.
Lily sat cross-legged on the plush living room rug, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks with her grandmother, Evelyn, who was visiting for the afternoon. Laughter echoed softly through the room as Lily proudly placed a small plastic knight on the highest tower.
Marcus sat at the kitchen island, reviewing the final legal documents brought over by his attorney to officially dissolve the marriage, annul the fraudulent trust agreement, and secure absolute, unchallengeable sole custody of Lily.
The doorbell rang.
Marcus stood up and walked to the front door, opening it to find Detective Thomas Vance standing on the porch holding a large manila envelope.
"Morning, Marcus," Detective Vance said with a reassuring smile. "Thought you'd want to see the final case summary before it goes to the district attorney's office for the grand jury indictment next week."
Marcus took the envelope, shaking the detective's hand firmly. "Thank you, Thomas. For everything. You didn't just help me solve a case; you saved my little girl's life."
"Just doing our job," Thomas replied, stepping back off the porch. "Julian Sterling tried to cut a deal this morning blaming the entire financial conspiracy on Sarah, but our digital forensics unit recovered email threads proving they planned the asset diversion together six months before they even moved in here. They're both facing a minimum of ten to fifteen years behind bars. You and Lily can finally breathe."
Marcus closed the front door, locked it securely, and walked back into the living room.
He knelt down beside the block castle. Lily looked up at him, her dark eyes bright, clear, and completely free of the frightened haze that had clouded them just days before.
"Daddy?" Lily asked softly, tilting her head. "Are you going away on business trips again soon?"
Marcus smiled, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a warm, unbreakable embrace.

"Never again, sweetheart," Marcus whispered fiercely against her hair. "Daddy's new job is right here at home, permanently."
Lily giggled, hugging him back with all her might. "Good. Because I need help building the castle gate, and nobody makes juice as good as you do anyway."
