Chapter 6 - The Visitor in the Kitchen

Julian Sterling entered the kitchen with the confident stride of a man who believed he owned the world. Dressed in an expensive Italian wool suit with his sleeves slightly rolled up, he tossed his car keys onto the marble island, walked over to the refrigerator, and helped himself to a bottle of imported sparkling water without even knocking or announcing himself.

He pulled out his phone, dialed Sarah's mobile number, and whispered into the receiver: "I'm in the kitchen. Where are you and the girl?"

"Upstairs in the master bedroom," Sarah's voice whispered back through the speaker. "I gave her half a dose of the drops ten minutes ago so she'd be completely out cold. Come on up, Julian. Let's finish signing the trust transfer documents before Marcus checks in again."

"Be right there," Julian murmured with a self-satisfied grin, turning toward the hallway stairs.

As he turned around, the kitchen overhead lights suddenly snapped on with a sharp click, flooding the room in harsh, brilliant white illumination.

Julian froze.

Standing right in the doorway leading to the hallway was Marcus Vance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his shirtsleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and his face wore an expression of absolute, terrifying calm.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The bottle of sparkling water slipped from his fingers, shattering against the tile floor, spraying glass and water across the room.

"M-Marcus?" Julian stammered, taking a panicked step backward against the counter. "I thought... I thought you were in Chicago."

Marcus walked slowly, deliberately toward him across the kitchen floor, his footsteps echoing like gunshots in the quiet house. "You thought wrong, Julian."

Before Julian could recover his composure or reach for his phone, heavy footsteps echoed from the front entryway and the side door simultaneously. Detective Thomas Vance, flanked by three uniformed officers in tactical vests, stepped into the kitchen, their badges gleaming under the lights.

"Julian Sterling, you have the right to remain silent," Detective Vance announced crisply, stepping forward and clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists before the stunned real estate developer could even raise his hands in defense. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"This is a mistake! You can't do this—this is private property!" Julian shouted, struggling against the cuffs as the officers pressed him against the marble island.

"It's not your property, Julian. And neither is the Cape Cod house you and Sarah were planning to steal," Marcus said coldly, stopping just inches away from him.

At that exact moment, Sarah appeared at the top of the kitchen stairs, holding a bathrobe tightly around her waist, her face pale as a sheet as she looked down at the scene below.

"Marcus..." Sarah gasped, her voice trembling as she clutched the wooden banister. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are the police here?"

Marcus looked up at her, his eyes devoid of any warmth or mercy.

"The game is over, Sarah," Marcus said clearly. "Pack your bags. The only place you're going tonight is a holding cell downtown."
