Chapter 17 - THE LAWYER’S ULTIMATUM

Daniel lunged across the attic floor, throwing his entire two-hundred-pound frame into Julian’s knees.
The suppressed pistol fired with a dull *phut*, the round tearing through the roof shingles above them, sending splinters of cedar raining down into the insulation. The two men crashed onto the plywood planks, rolling violently in the narrow space between the rafters.
Julian was faster, trained to kill with clinical efficiency. He drove a short, brutal elbow into Daniel’s ribs, cracking bone and knocking the breath from Daniel’s lungs. Daniel gasped, black spots dancing across his vision, but he didn't retreat. He grabbed Julian’s wrist with both hands and slammed it repeatedly against an exposed structural joist until the 9mm slipped from the mercenary's fingers and fell through the attic hatch, clattering onto the concrete garage floor below.
"You're a dead man!" Julian hissed, driving his thumb toward Daniel’s eye socket.
Daniel twisted his neck, sinking his teeth through Julian’s glove, biting down into the fleshy meat of his hand until warm blood filled his mouth. Julian let out a ragged grunt of pain and threw Daniel off him, scrambling toward the hatch.
Daniel rolled over, grabbed the discarded tire iron from the floor, and swung it with all his remaining strength.
The heavy iron connected with Julian’s shin with a sickening *crack*.
Julian screamed, tumbling headfirst through the attic opening. He crashed onto the hood of Daniel’s Expedition, his heavy body denting the metal sheet, right next to the explosive charge.
Inside the car, Lily screamed. Winston threw himself against the driver-side window, barking frantically, baring his fangs through the glass.
Julian rolled off the hood, clutching his broken leg, groaning on the garage floor. Blood smeared the white paint of the SUV. He reached for his belt, his bloody fingers groping for the remote detonator.
Daniel dropped through the hatch, landing hard on his feet, ignoring the searing pain in his cracked ribs. He brought the tire iron down across Julian’s forearm, shattering the radio transmitter into a dozen pieces of useless plastic.
"Stay down!" Daniel roared, pinning Julian’s throat beneath the iron bar.
From the street outside, tires screeched against wet pavement.
A silver sedan slammed into the curb at the end of the driveway. The driver's door flew open, and a woman stepped out into the pouring rain.
She wore a sodden trench coat, her long blonde hair plastered to her skull by the storm. Her face was gaunt, her eyes sunken and manic, burning with an unholy fever.
It was Evelyn.
In her hands, she held a twelve-gauge pump-action shotgun, pointed straight through the open garage door at the windshield of the Expedition where Ethan was sitting.

"Daniel!" she shrieked over the roar of the downpour. "Get away from my brother, or I blow that car in half!"
