Chapter 16 - THE WHISPER ON THE BABY MONITOR

Daniel dropped the notebook and spun around, raising the heavy tire iron in both hands.
Standing in the shadows of the attic, illuminated only by the faint light filtering through the vent slats, was a man in his late forties. He wore a dark tactical fleece, combat trousers, and fingerless gloves. His hair was cropped short, silver at the temples, and his left cheek was carved by an old, jagged burn scar.
Julian Montgomery.
In his right hand, Julian held a suppressed 9mm pistol, pointed steadily at Daniel’s chest.
"Evelyn was always too emotional," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of human warmth. "She enjoyed the boy’s screaming too much. I told her that cruelty is only useful when it serves a balance sheet. Now she’s broken out of custody, police are crawling over the entire county, and my exit strategy is compromised."
"You touch my children," Daniel snarled, stepping forward despite the gun barrel, "and I will tear your throat out with my bare hands."
Julian gave a faint, chilling smirk. "You won't get the chance. Look down at your car, Daniel."
Daniel glanced through the attic hatch. Down in the garage, the Expedition sat with its doors locked. But sitting on the hood of the vehicle, directly in front of the windshield where Ethan and Lily were watching with terror, was a small, black plastic brick with a blinking red LED light.
A remote-detonated breaching charge.
"The detonator is tied to my pulse monitor," Julian said calmly, tapping the smartwatch on his wrist. "If my heart stops, your car becomes a fireball. Drop the iron."
Daniel let the iron fall. It clattered against the attic floorboards with a dull, heavy thud.
"What do you want?" Daniel asked, every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring.
"The hard drive Clarissa buried under your garden shed before the arrest," Julian replied. "She didn't tell me where it was until this morning. It has the account numbers for the Cayman funds. You dig it up, hand it to me, and I let you and the boy drive away."
"And Lily?" Daniel’s voice dropped to a lethal register.
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "Clarissa wants the girl. The girl has an eye for cameras. Clarissa thinks she’ll make a much better daughter once she’s re-educated."
Downstairs, the Expedition’s horn began to blare.
Not a steady alarm—it was being pressed rhythmically. Short bursts.
*Dot-dot-dot. Dash-dash-dash. Dot-dot-dot.*
S-O-S.
Ethan. Ethan was leaning over the front console, slamming his palm against the horn pad with everything he had.
Julian frowned, his focus shifting for a fraction of a second toward the floor hatch.

That was all Daniel needed.
