Chapter 15 - LILY’S DRAWING IN THE ATTIC

The garage door rattled as it rose into the gloomy morning light. Rain fell in heavy, gray sheets, drumming against the roof of the Ford Expedition like a thousand tiny fingers.
Daniel buckled the kids into the back seat, Winston leaping in between them, pressing his broad, golden head into Lily’s lap. Daniel threw the duffel bags into the trunk, slammed the tailgate, and climbed behind the steering wheel.
Before shifting into reverse, Daniel looked up at the rearview mirror. His eyes caught the rectangular square of the attic access panel in the garage ceiling.
The panel was shifted out of place by two inches.
A thin trail of yellow fiberglass insulation dust clung to the edge of the aluminum trim.
Daniel’s stomach dropped. Without a word to the children, he cut the engine, opened his door, and reached under the driver's seat for the heavy iron tire iron.
"Dad?" Ethan asked, alarm instantly spiking in his voice. "Where are you going?"
"Stay in the car. Keep the doors locked. Winston, guard," Daniel ordered, his voice clipped and razor-sharp.
The dog let out a sharp, obedient bark and leaned against Lily’s chest.
Daniel pulled the aluminum ladder from the garage wall, set it beneath the attic hatch, and climbed up three rungs until his head cleared the opening. He clicked his tactical light on and swept the darkness beneath the rafters.
The smell hit him first: stale coffee, tobacco smoke, and damp wool.
Directly above the garage, laid out across two plywood planks over the joists, was a makeshift sniper's nest. A sleeping bag, three empty ration cans, and a tripod mount facing a small vent hole that overlooked Daniel’s driveway.
Julian Montgomery hadn't just visited the yard. He had been living above their heads.
Beside the sleeping bag lay a spiral notebook. Daniel climbed fully into the crawlspace, his heart thudding violently against his ribs, and picked up the pad. On the first page were handwritten notes detailing Daniel’s daily schedule:
*07:15 — D. leaves for office.*
*08:10 — Kids board bus at corner.*
*14:30 — Evelyn handles the boy at sink (No visible marks below collarline).*
*16:00 — Girl hides in pantry. Let her record. Keep the leverage.*
Daniel read the last line three times. His vision blurred with red fury.
*Let her record.*
They had *known* Lily was recording on the pink phone. Evelyn hadn't been careless. Julian had instructed her to let the little girl document the abuse.
Why? Why would an abuser deliberately allow evidence to be gathered?
Daniel flipped the page. Glued to the back of the notebook was a legal document: an insurance policy taken out in Ethan’s and Daniel’s names four months after Daniel had married Evelyn. A six-million-dollar accidental death and dismemberment policy, underwritten by an offshore syndicate in Grand Cayman.
The abuse wasn't just sadism. It was the setup for a staged domestic tragedy. The videos were meant to frame Daniel for child abuse when the final 'accident' occurred, leaving Evelyn to inherit the entire estate while Daniel rotted in a state penitentiary.
A metallic click sounded from behind him in the attic darkness.

"You read fast, Daniel," a deep voice rasped from behind the chimney stack.
