Chapter 7 - The General's Choice

I spent the next twelve hours believing General Hale had betrayed me.

Then I discovered he had been trying to protect me from something far worse.

Estelle refused to leave the house.

Neither did I.

Victor wanted everyone moved somewhere secure.

Blake wanted to call a lawyer.

Lorraine wanted to confess.

And I wanted answers.

I confronted Hale at the Pentagon that night.

He was waiting in his office.

"Close the door."

I did.

Then I placed the two ledgers on his desk.

"Explain."

He looked at them.

"I was hoping you would find them."

"Don't insult me."

"I won't."

He sat.

"I was nineteen years into my career when Daniel Voss died."

"You were in the investigation."

"Yes."

"You had his name in the ledger."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel paid me."

My chest tightened.

He continued.

"Not to protect him."

"Then why?"

"To protect your mother."

I stared.

"What?"

"Your mother approached me."

He opened a drawer.

Pulled out a photograph.

My mother.

Me.

Victor.

Hale.

Taken in a hospital courtyard.

I had never seen it.

"She knew the company was compromised. She believed someone was using military procurement to launder money."

"And Daniel?"

"He was one of the intermediaries."

"Did he kill anyone?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Hale leaned back.

"That's the question I never answered."

I pointed at his name.

"Why are you in the ledger?"

"Your mother paid me."

I stared.

"With what money?"

"My own."

I frowned.

He explained.

"She put money into an account under my name so she could track transactions without exposing herself."

"That sounds convenient."

"It wasn't."

He opened another file.

Inside were bank records.

The account was indeed his.

But the funds had moved out immediately.

To an account in my name.

I recognized the account number.

It was the trust Victor had created for me when I was eight.

The one I never knew existed.

"I thought my father abandoned me."

"He did."

Hale's answer was blunt.

"But before he did, your mother made him promise one thing."

"What?"

"Keep you alive."

I sat down.

"Why did he send me away?"

"Because someone threatened you."

"Who?"

"Voss's killer."

"Name."

"I never learned it."

I looked at the ledger again.

"Then why is your name there?"

"Because I was the person your mother trusted."

"And now someone is trying to make it look like you were involved."

"Correct."

"Why?"

Hale looked at me.

"Because they need one last scapegoat."

My phone buzzed.

A secure alert.

OFFICIAL REVIEW: COLONEL MAYA CALDWELL SUSPENDED PENDING INVESTIGATION.

I stared at the screen.

"What?"

Hale stood.

"Someone moved quickly."

"Who signed it?"

I opened the notification.

Thomas Redd.

"That's impossible."

"No," Hale said. "It's very possible."

"But Redd is under protection."

"He was."

"Was?"

Hale's face darkened.

"He disappeared."

I looked up.

"When?"

"Four minutes ago."

"Where?"

"From a secure federal facility."

A cold sensation moved through me.

"He escaped."

"No."

Hale shook his head.

"He was extracted."

By whom?

I didn't ask.

The answer was already waiting on my phone.

A photograph had arrived.

Redd stood beside a black SUV.

Behind him was a man in a dark suit.

Victor Caldwell.

My father.

The message underneath said:

YOUR FATHER CHOSE HIS SIDE.

I looked at Hale.

"Did he?"

The general didn't answer.

I called Victor.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Blake called next.

His voice was frantic.

"Where are you?"

"Pentagon."

"Get back to the house."

"Why?"

"Because Lorraine is gone."

My body went cold.

"What do you mean?"

"Her car is gone."

"Where's your father?"

"He disappeared too."

I stood.

Hale grabbed his coat.

"We're going."

"Where?"

He looked at me.

"To Estelle."

"Why?"

"Because she's the only person who knows the final name."

"What final name?"

May you like

He opened the door.

"The person your mother feared most."
