Chapter 18 - The Arrest

They took my weapon first.

Then my phone.

Then my rank insignia.

The humiliation was deliberate.

One agent read the warrant.

"Unauthorized possession of classified material. Interference with federal operations. Espionage."

I almost laughed.

"Espionage?"

He didn't respond.

Blake stepped forward.

"Show me the signed order."

A second agent shoved him back.

Hale snapped:

"Don't touch him."

The room froze.

The agent lowered his hand.

Hale stepped toward me.

"Don't say anything."

I stared at him.

"You said trust the evidence."

"I still do."

"Then why am I being arrested?"

"Because they need you isolated."

"From my mother?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

His eyes hardened.

"Because she isn't the only person at Blackridge."

That was the first time he sounded genuinely afraid.

They put handcuffs on me.

Victor moved toward me.

"Stop."

An agent blocked him.

"I'm her father."

The agent looked at the file.

"Not according to the original record."

Victor went white.

I felt the same shock.

"What did you say?"

The agent looked at me.

"Your birth record was amended."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"Who signed it?"

The agent handed me a copy.

There were two names.

Victor Caldwell.

Eleanor Caldwell.

And beneath them:

AUTHORIZED WITNESS — MARCUS HALE.

I looked at Hale.

"You signed my birth record."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your original birth record had a different father."

Silence.

I stared at Victor.

He looked devastated.

"Who?"

Hale didn't answer.

Victor did.

"I don't know."

The agent pulled me toward the door.

"No."

I stopped.

"You're not taking me until I know."

The agent reached for my arm.

Hale intervened.

"Enough."

His voice carried the authority of four stars.

Even now.

Even compromised.

Even accused.

Everyone stopped.

Hale turned to me.

"Your biological father was a classified intelligence officer."

"Name?"

"Samuel Caldwell."

I froze.

"Calder?"

"No."

"Caldwell?"

"Yes."

"How is that possible?"

"Because Victor adopted you."

I looked at Victor.

He nodded.

"I knew."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Samuel died before you were born."

"How?"

"Meridian."

Everything inside me went silent.

My mother had married Victor.

But my biological father was another man.

And Meridian had killed him.

"What did he have?"

Hale answered:

"A ledger."

"The one Adrian mentioned."

"Yes."

"The real last page."

Hale nodded.

"The page says who funded the original program."

I stared at him.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

The agent pulled me again.

As I was led outside, Victor shouted:

"Maya!"

I turned.

He threw something.

I caught it.

A wedding ring.

I stared.

He said:

"Your mother gave me that the night she left."

The inside was engraved.

M.C.

Underneath a date.

And a second inscription.

FIND SAMUEL'S DAUGHTER.

My hands trembled.

I looked at Victor.

"She knew."

He nodded.

"She always knew."

The transport vehicle door slammed shut.

I was driven to a detention facility.

Three hours later, I was brought into an interrogation room.

The man waiting for me wasn't a federal agent.

It was Thomas Redd.

He sat across from me.

Older.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

The man named on the recording as the person who ordered Eleanor's death.

"You've caused quite a problem."

I said nothing.

He smiled.

"Your mother always had a weakness."

"What?"

"She believed truth was enough."

He leaned closer.

"It isn't."

"You're the one who ordered her death."

His expression barely changed.

"No."

"Victor named you."

"Victor was frightened."

"The recording exists."

"The recording proves nothing."

"I heard your voice."

"You heard a voice."

"You threatened me."

"I warned you."

"What's at Blackridge?"

He smiled.

"Your mother."

My heart stopped.

"You know where she is."

"Of course."

"Is she alive?"

"Yes."

Tears stung my eyes.

"Take me to her."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because she asked me not to."

I stared at him.

"You're lying."

"Maybe."

He stood.

"You want to know the truth about your mother?"

"Yes."

"Then stop asking who tried to kill her."

He placed a folder on the table.

"Ask who she was trying to protect."

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Samuel Caldwell.

My biological father.

Standing beside Eleanor.

And between them—

Hale.

All three were smiling.

On the back of the photograph:

THEY STARTED THIS TOGETHER.

I looked up.

Redd was gone.

Then the room speakers activated.

Hale's voice came through.

"Maya, don't believe the photograph."

I stared at the ceiling.

"How are you talking to me?"

Silence.

Then:

"Because I built the interrogation room."

The lights went out.

A door opened behind me.

A woman whispered:

"Run."

I turned.

Lorraine stood there.

And behind her was Eleanor.

Older.

May you like

Gray-haired.

Alive.
