Chapter 14 - The Daughter They Wanted

The alert appeared on every remaining monitor.

COLONEL MAYA CALDWELL — PERSON OF INTEREST

I stared at my own photograph.

Rank.

Service record.

Awards.

Then the words:

POTENTIAL SECURITY THREAT.

I laughed once.

Nobody else did.

"They made me a fugitive."

Hale lowered his phone.

"Not yet."

"They just labeled me a threat."

"They're trying to isolate you."

"From whom?"

"Everyone."

Blake looked at the dead screens.

"We need to get out."

Adrian smiled.

"Too late."

The building shook.

An explosion sounded somewhere above us.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Federal agents moved toward the exits.

Hale grabbed me.

"Now."

We ran.

The corridor was chaos.

Emergency alarms.

Shouting.

Boots.

Doors slamming.

Smoke.

Someone had cut power to the security wing.

I followed Blake through a service passage.

Victor was behind us.

Lorraine stayed close to him.

Adrian was nowhere.

I didn't realize until we reached the loading tunnel.

"Where's Adrian?"

Hale looked back.

"He's gone."

"How?"

"Someone opened his cell."

"Who?"

Hale didn't answer.

We reached a vehicle bay.

Three armored SUVs were waiting.

Hale pointed to one.

"Get in."

I stopped.

"No."

He turned.

"Maya."

"I'm done being moved around like a package."

"You are currently the subject of a federal alert."

"Then tell me the truth."

He stared at me.

"What truth?"

"Why did my mother choose my father?"

Victor looked down.

Hale said nothing.

I turned to Victor.

"You told me she chose you because she needed someone strong enough to survive."

"Yes."

"But that's not all."

"No."

"Why you?"

Victor swallowed.

"Because I was already inside."

"Inside what?"

"Meridian."

I stared.

"You were an agent?"

"Not exactly."

"What were you?"

His silence answered.

I stepped closer.

"You worked for them."

"I did."

"Before Mom."

"Yes."

"Then she married you to gain access."

Victor closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The revelation hit differently.

My entire childhood suddenly looked like a constructed room.

The house.

The dinners.

The holidays.

My father's expensive suits.

My mother's locked office.

Their careful distance.

Were any of it real?

"Did you love her?"

Victor looked at me.

"That was the one thing Meridian couldn't control."

His voice cracked.

"Yes."

"And did she love you?"

"Eventually."

I turned away.

My mother had built a marriage as an operation.

And somehow turned it into something human.

That was almost worse.

Hale approached.

"There's more."

I laughed.

"Of course there is."

"Eleanor didn't just marry Victor to enter Meridian."

"What else?"

"She needed a child."

My stomach dropped.

"Why?"

"Because the program was built around legacy access."

I stared at him.

"You're saying I was part of the plan."

"No."

He shook his head.

"She changed the plan."

"When?"

"The day she held you."

Victor nodded.

"She told me she was leaving."

"Leaving Meridian?"

"Leaving everything."

"She wanted me."

"Yes."

I looked at Victor.

"And that's when they tried to take me."

"Yes."

The pieces fit too well.

A child.

An undercover mother.

A father inside the system.

A corporation built around information.

And me at the center.

"Why did my father deny me for twenty-six years?"

Victor's eyes filled.

"I thought if you hated me, you'd stay away."

"From what?"

"From Meridian."

My voice shook.

"You let me believe you wanted nothing to do with me."

"I thought rejection would save you."

"It broke me."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

I stepped back.

"You missed birthdays."

"I know."

"Graduation."

"I know."

"My first deployment."

"I know."

"My mother's anniversary."

Victor covered his face.

"I was there."

"What?"

"At your graduation."

I stared.

"From the back."

"You watched me?"

"Every year."

"Why didn't you speak to me?"

"Because I couldn't trust myself not to tell you."

I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I cried.

It was the strangest kind of grief.

Not for a dead father.

For a living one who had been standing ten feet away from my life.

Blake quietly said, "We have to move."

Hale opened the SUV.

I got in.

Victor followed.

As we pulled away, my phone vibrated.

One new message.

THIS ISN'T YOUR FATHER'S SECRET.

A second message.

IT'S YOURS.

Then an image appeared.

A medical record.

Patient:

MAYA CALDWELL.

Date of birth:

Twenty-six years ago.

Under diagnosis was a handwritten notation.

ORIGINAL SUBJECT.

I stared at it.

"What the hell am I looking at?"

Nobody answered.

Then Victor said quietly:

"My God."

Hale reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

"No."

He looked at me.

"I know what that file means."

"Then you're going to tell me."

His face went pale.

"It means Meridian didn't recruit your mother."

May you like

He looked at Victor.

"It recruited your bloodline."
