Chapter 8 - Crossfire of Secrets

*BOOM!*

The hydraulic pins on the vault door gave way with a deafening, metallic crash that rattled the light fixtures overhead.

The massive, four-inch-thick steel door swung inward on its heavy hinges. Dense, gray clouds of thermite smoke and aerosol propellant billowed into the room, obscuring the entrance in an opaque fog.

Through the haze, the red laser sights of twenty tactical rifles sliced through the air like crimson spiderwebs.

*"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! WEAPONS ON THE FLOOR! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"*

A squad of heavily armored federal operators, wearing black tactical gear with gold marshal shields emblazoned across their chest plates, swarmed into the chamber. Their submachine guns were raised, sweeping the room with disciplined, lethal precision. Behind them walked Director Evelyn Hayes, flanked by two armed military police captains.

"Hold your fire!" General Vance yelled from the floor, coughing through the smoke, holding his hands high in the air. "Hold your fire! We are unarmed!"

The marshals immediately fanned out around the perimeter, securing the corners, kicking Adams' empty sidearm away from the table, and pinning the terrified colonels against the wall.

Two operators moved toward Briana, their weapons lowered slightly, recognizing her stance and the bio-implant glowing beneath her rolled-up sleeve.

"Captain Mitchell?" the lead marshal asked, his voice respectful beneath his ballistic balaclava.

Briana didn't move. She kept her eyes fixed entirely on Admiral Thompson. "Secure the perimeter, Marshal. The Admiral was just about to sign a full operational confession."

Director Hayes stepped through the smoke, her sharp heels clicking against the carpet. She stood at the end of the mahogany table, looking down at Thompson, who was slumped in his chair like a deflated balloon, his hands trembling violently.

"Jack Thompson," Director Hayes said, her voice echoing through the silent chamber. "By executive order of the President of the United States, you are relieved of your command, stripped of your rank, and placed under immediate arrest for high treason, espionage, and the capital murder of Master Sergeant Donald Keller, Sergeant First Class Marcus Alvarez, and Lieutenant Elena Cruz."

Thompson looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, wild, the eyes of a madman who had watched his entire universe collapse in thirty minutes.

"You can't do this to me!" Thompson shrieked, spitting onto the polished wood. "I built this defense architecture! I kept this country safe while you bureaucrats sat in your air-conditioned offices! You need men like me! You need men who are willing to do the dirty work in the dark!"

Briana stepped forward, placing herself directly between Thompson and the Director.

She reached down, grabbed Thompson by the starched lapels of his uniform, and yanked him upward until his face was inches from hers.

"The men and women of Ghost Unit 7 did the dirty work in the dark, Jack," Briana hissed, her voice vibrating with righteous, unrelenting fury. "They slept in the mud. They bled in the freezing cold. They gave their lives for a country that didn't even know their names. You didn't do the dirty work. You sat in a leather chair and signed their death warrants for money."

She shoved him back down into his seat. The four stars on his collar rattled against each other.

"Sign the confession," Briana said, pointing the pen at the paper. "Or I swear on the souls of my team, I will turn off the live broadcast and let these marshals walk out of this room for five minutes."

Thompson looked at the marshals. They stood motionless, their weapons held at low-ready, their expressions cold and stone-faced behind their masks. Not one of them looked at Thompson with sympathy. To them, he wasn't an Admiral. He was a traitor who had killed his own operators.

Thompson’s trembling hand reached out.

His fingers wrapped around the heavy mahogany fountain pen.

With tears of humiliation and rage spilling down his cheeks, his signature scratched across the parchment, sealing his fate, his disgrace, and his execution under military law.
