Chapter 3 - The Architect in the Room

"You have no authority here, Captain Vance," Admiral Thompson hissed, his composure returning like a venomous snake coiling to strike. He leaned over the table, trying to use every inch of his formidable rank to intimidate her. "You are officially declared deceased. Legally, you do not exist. You are an unauthorized combatant who has infiltrated a Class-A Department of Defense facility. Do you have any idea what the protocol is for this?"
"I wrote the protocol, Jack," Briana said, stepping around the perimeter of the table with predatory grace. Her fingers lightly grazed the polished wood as she walked behind the seated generals.
Every single man’s shoulders tensed as she passed behind them. These were men who moved divisions of soldiers with a signature, yet not one of them dared to turn around and meet her eyes.
"Protocol Alpha-Zero," Briana continued, her voice soft, conversational, and terrifying. "In the event of a verified breach of the National Command Authority by a compromised senior flag officer, any active Tier-1 operator possessing Level-5 cryptographic clearance is authorized to assume emergency command of the compartmented facility until an independent tribunal is established."
"You're insane," General Vance barked, sweating profusely through his starched collar. "You think you're going to hold twelve flag officers hostage inside the Pentagon? The Joint Staff knows we're in this room! When we miss the hourly check-in at fourteen hundred hours, a mechanized infantry company from Fort Myer will breach those blast doors with heavy cutting charges!"
Briana glanced at the wall clock. "It's thirteen-fifty-two, General. You have eight minutes. But don't worry about the check-in."
She tapped her forearm again. The blue light under her skin flared brightly, interfacing with the room's master communications matrix. The large monitors split into twelve distinct display windows.
"The automated status report has already been sent to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs," Briana said, smiling coldly. "It carries Admiral Thompson’s personal cryptographic signature. It states that this briefing has transitioned into a Level-Omega compartmentalized review regarding deep-state intelligence leaks, and that Sub-Level Seven is to remain under radio-silent hard lockdown for the next six hours. No one is coming down that elevator. No one is knocking on that door."
Thompson’s knuckles turned white. "You think you've won? You think you can blackmail the Department of Defense? Whatever files you think you pulled off Marcus’s rig are useless without the private decryption key from the Zurich servers!"
"You mean this key?"
Briana raised her left hand. Between her index and middle finger sat a micro-SD card encased in a heavy ceramic shell, stripped from the black-box transponder of the Reaper drone that had slaughtered her squad.
"You really shouldn't have contracted the strike out to the 432nd Wing out of Creech, Jack," she murmured. "The pilot thought he was firing on a high-value Al-Qaeda cell. But the target acquisition telemetry was personally authorized by your terminal here in Briefing Room Delta. IP address 192.168.4.11. Terminal Jack-Thompson-Actual."
She plugged the card into the master terminal embedded in the table.
Instantly, the wall screens shifted. High-definition satellite playback footage appeared, showing the Hindu Kush mountain pass. A chilling green targeting reticle was locked onto four tiny thermal signatures huddled against the snow.
Over the room’s high-fidelity speakers, an audio recording began to play.
The voice was unmistakably Admiral Jack Thompson’s.
*"Target confirmed. Ghost Unit 7 has completed data extraction. We cannot allow that ledger to enter the public congressional record. Terminate the package with extreme prejudice. Authorize Hellfire strike. Code: Broken Arrow."*
The silence that followed was absolute.
Colonel Miller, a silver-haired officer sitting on Thompson's left, slowly turned his head to stare at the Admiral. His face was a mask of sheer horror. "Jack... you told the committee that Ghost Unit was ambushed by a local warlord's heavy mortar team. You told us the drive was destroyed in an ammunition cook-off."
"Shut up, Miller!" Thompson snapped, his eyes wild, darting across the locked room.
"You murdered our own operators?" General Vance stammered, pulling back his chair in utter disgust. "You used a strike asset against an American Tier-1 black-ops team to cover your own tracks?"
"Look at the ledger, Vance!" Thompson roared, finally losing his cool, slamming his fists down. "Look at what was on that drive! It wasn't just my name! It’s the names of three sitting senators! Two undersecretaries of state! Half the defense contracting board! If that data had gone public, the entire budget authorization for the fifth-generation stealth bomber program would have been frozen! The stock market would have cratered forty percent in a single morning! I made a command decision to preserve the stability of this nation!"
"You made a decision to preserve your Cayman Islands trust fund," Briana countered, her voice cutting through his outburst like a razor through silk.
She tapped the keyboard again. A spreadsheet populated with seven-figure wire transfers, shell corporations, and offshore holding entities bloomed across the screens.
"Twelve billion dollars diverted from the Afghan reconstruction fund," Briana recited, her eyes locking onto Thompson. "Laundered through private security contractors in Dubai, and deposited into accounts bearing your wife’s maiden name. Marcus, Bear, and Elena didn't die for national security, Admiral. They died so you could buy a two-hundred-foot yacht in Monaco."
Thompson looked around the table. The twelve men who had shared his laughter minutes before were now looking at him with naked loathing and abject terror. They realized that Briana Mitchell wasn't just here to kill Thompson.

She had lured them all into this vault to make them witness the execution of an empire.
