Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Door

The sudden, violent shriek of high-temperature cutting torches ripped through the silence.
Along the outer perimeter of the four-inch-thick vault door, glowing orange circles began to blister the hardened steel. The facility’s internal tactical security forces had finally bypassed the elevator locks. Delta Force or Pentagon Quick Reaction Forces were on the other side, deploying thermite-plasma torches to burn through the hydraulic locking pins.
"They're breaching," Colonel Miller whispered, a spark of desperate hope igniting in his eyes. "They're cutting through the door! You have five minutes, Vance! Five minutes before thirty Tier-1 operators flood this room with flashbangs and submachine guns!"
Briana didn't even look at the door. "It takes seven minutes to cut through a Class-Four naval blast door using exothermic cutting rods, Colonel. You have three. And when they breach that door, they aren't going to save you. They're going to secure the room and follow protocol."
"You think they'll listen to you?" Thompson spat, a manic grin returning to his pale face as he heard the sparks sizzling through the steel. "You're an armed intruder holding the Joint Staff hostage! The breach protocol for an active hostile in Sub-Level Seven is immediate lethal neutralization! No questions asked! They will turn you into swiss cheese before you can utter a single word!"
"That's where you're wrong, Jack," Briana said calmly.
She turned back to the master terminal and initiated a video call.
The large center monitor, which had been displaying the satellite imagery, suddenly clicked. The Department of Defense seal appeared on the screen, followed by a secure, quantum-encrypted video link.
A face materialized on the 4K display.
An elderly African American woman with short-cropped silver hair, wearing sharp civilian business attire and a pair of reading glasses, looked down through the camera lens. Her face was etched with lines of immense authority and exhaustion.
The twelve officers in the room froze as if struck by lightning.
"Director Hayes..." General Vance croaked from the floor, his voice barely audible over the hissing of the torches.
Director Evelyn Hayes. The Director of National Intelligence. The only civilian intelligence official in the country who answered directly to the President of the United States, bypassing the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff.
*"Captain Mitchell,"* Director Hayes said, her voice resonant and completely composed. *"I see you've secured the compartment."*
Thompson surged forward, gripping the edge of the table, screaming at the screen. *"Evelyn! She’s holding us hostage! She breached Sub-Level Seven! She disarmed my officers! Authorize the breach team to use lethal force immediately! She has compromised the entire Department of Defense!"*
Director Hayes slowly lowered her glasses, looking through the screen at Thompson with a gaze of profound, chilling disgust.
*"Shut up, Jack,"* Hayes said flatly.
The room went dead silent. The hissing of the torches outside seemed to fade into background static.
*"Three hours ago, Captain Mitchell transmitted the first packet of decrypted files directly to the Oval Office,"* Director Hayes continued, her voice cold as an arctic wind. *"The President has reviewed the financial ledgers from Cyprus. He has reviewed the drone strike telemetry from October fourteenth. He has personally confirmed the authorization codes used to target Ghost Unit 7."*
Thompson’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face shifted from crimson to an ashen, ghost-like gray.
*"The operators cutting through that door aren't coming to rescue you, Admiral,"* Director Hayes said, each word landing like a five-hundred-pound bomb inside the chamber. *"They are a special federal marshal task force under my direct executive authority. They are coming to arrest you for high treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and crimes against the United States of America."*
Director Hayes shifted her gaze to Briana. The hard lines of her face softened by an imperceptible fraction.
*"Captain Mitchell. Stand down and prepare to receive the entry team. You've brought them into the light. Your mission is complete."*
Briana looked at the screen, then turned her eyes back to Thompson.

"Not yet, Director," Briana said quietly. "He hasn't signed the confession."
