Chapter 8 - Into the Catacombs

In the absolute darkness, the room exploded into chaos.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the shadows like erratic lightning, accompanied by the concussive roars of assault rifles tearing the floral wallpaper to shreds. Plaster dust choked the air, burning Claire’s lungs as she crawled across the Persian rug, guided only by the sound of her mother’s breathing.

“Vanessa! Mother! To the dumbwaiter!” Claire screamed over the deafening gunfire.

Her hands found Vanessa’s trench coat in the dark. Vanessa was hyperventilating, but she was holding Eleanor tightly against her side. Together, the two sisters dragged their mother toward the opened panel.

“Get in!” Claire ordered, pushing Eleanor into the small steel platform of the counterweight lift.

“Claire, it won't hold three of us!” Vanessa yelled through the darkness. A stray bullet sparked violently against the steel frame of the shaft, inches from her ear. “The cable will snap!”

“We aren't riding it down!” Claire shouted back. “The counterweight cable! If we cut the brake, it drops to the basement like a stone! Mother, hold onto the safety bar!”

Eleanor gripped the interior steel rail. Claire reached into the machinery housing, feeling for the heavy mechanical release lever her mother had pointed out. With a vicious pull, she wrenched it downward.

The heavy steel platform plummeted down the vertical shaft with a terrifying metallic shriek, carrying Eleanor away from the kill zone just as a mercenary’s tactical flashlight beam swept across the wall, pinning Claire and Vanessa in its blinding white glare.

“There!” a voice barked.

Claire didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, tackling the mercenary around his knees before he could bring his rifle to bear. They crashed into the hallway floor. The man was easily eighty pounds heavier than her, pure muscle and combat armor, but Claire fought with the feral desperation of someone with nothing left to lose. She clawed at his eyes, drove her elbow into his throat, and bit down savagely on his forearm.

The mercenary roared in pain, dropping his weapon.

From behind, Vanessa swung the heavy iron tire iron with both hands, channeling every ounce of aristocratic rage she possessed. The metal bar slammed into the side of the mercenary’s tactical helmet with a dull *CLANG!*

The man went limp, collapsing face-first onto the dusty marble.

Vanessa stood over him, chest heaving, the tire iron trembling in her bloody hands. She looked at Claire, her eyes wide with shock. “Did I... did I just kill him?”

“He’s just unconscious,” Claire panted, grabbing the fallen mercenary’s sidearm and his heavy tactical flashlight. “Now move! The fire stairs!”

Ethan’s remaining guard was advancing down the hall, his rifle spitting bursts of fire. Claire fired three blind shots down the corridor, forcing the shooter to duck behind a concrete archway, buying them precious seconds.

They sprinted toward the western fire escape—not the main stairs where Ethan’s reinforcements were waiting, but an exterior steel staircase clinging to the outside of the decaying brick facade.

Claire kicked open the rusted emergency exit. The freezing Hudson Valley storm hit them like a wall of ice. Wind howled through the iron railings, four stories above the jagged rocks of the ravine below.

“Down! Go, go, go!” Claire urged.

They descended the rusted metal stairs as bullets pinged off the steel risers beneath their feet. Halfway down the third landing, an ancient support bracket gave way with a sickening groan of tearing metal. The staircase tilted violently outward, hanging suspended over the abyss.

Vanessa screamed, slipping over the edge, her fingers barely catching the bottom rung of the railing.

“Vanessa!” Claire dropped to her stomach on the wet, vibrating metal, reaching down with both arms. She grabbed Vanessa’s wrists just as the heiress’s grip failed.

Below them, sixty feet down, lay a bed of jagged slate boulders and the roaring, flooded waters of the mountain creek.

“Let me go!” Vanessa sobbed, the rain plastering her blonde hair across her face. “The bracket is snapping, Claire! If you don't let go, we both fall!”

“Shut up!” Claire screamed, her teeth grinding together, every muscle in her back and shoulders tearing in agony as she pulled. “I spent eighteen years without a sister! I am not dropping you off this goddamn building!”

With a primal scream that echoed into the storm, Claire threw her weight backward, hauling Vanessa up over the railing onto the landing. They tumbled together onto the rusted iron platform just as the upper section of the staircase ripped free from the wall, crashing down into the courtyard below in a thunder of twisted steel.

They were cut off from above. But directly in front of them was an old maintenance coal chute leading into the hillside beneath the asylum.

“In there!” Vanessa gasped, pointing to the dark concrete tunnel.

They slid down the slick chute, tumbling into the subterranean catacombs of Blackwood Manor—and straight into the crosshairs of another nightmare.
