Chapter 16 - Rikers Island Confession

The federal lockdown of Rikers Island was instantaneous.
Within thirty minutes of Ethan Vale’s sudden, violent death, the Department of Corrections sealed the entire facility. Tactical response teams in black helmets and assault rifles patrolled the corridors, while federal investigators swarmed the visitor booth.
Claire sat on a metal bench in the warden’s private office, wrapped in an emergency wool blanket. Marcus stood beside her, his hand resting on the holster beneath his suit coat, shouting furiously into his encrypted satellite phone at the Deputy Attorney General.
The heavy steel door opened, and Vanessa burst in.
She bypassed the warden, bypassed the federal marshals, and dropped to her knees in front of Claire, grabbing both of her sister’s hands. Vanessa’s breathing was ragged; she had broken every traffic law in New York City driving from Park Avenue to the Bronx.
"Are you hurt?" Vanessa demanded, her eyes frantically scanning Claire’s face, her neck, her hands. "Did you touch anything? Did he touch you?"
"I'm fine," Claire whispered, her voice hollow, echoing with shock. "It was through the glass. The air vents... or the water they gave him before he entered the booth. It was cyanide or a military-grade nerve agent. He died in less than forty seconds, Vanessa."
Vanessa pulled Claire into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying her face in her sister’s hair. "I shouldn't have let you come. I should have locked you in the penthouse. I almost lost you again."
Claire didn't return the hug immediately. Ethan Vale’s dying words were still screaming in her ears like sirens in a tunnel.
*She didn't lose you, Cecilia. She sold you.*
Claire pulled back gently, looking into Vanessa’s identical dark eyes. "Vanessa... before he began convulsing, he told me something."
Vanessa froze, her expression instantly guarded. "Ethan was a pathological sociopath, Claire. Whatever he said, it was designed to poison your mind."
"He told me to check page ninety-nine of the vault ledger," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly. "He said... he said on the night I was taken from the nursery, Mother wired five million dollars to a private airfield in Geneva."
Vanessa’s face went rigid. The color didn't drain from her cheeks; instead, an unsettling, stony silence settled over her features. She looked away, toward the rain beating against the reinforced office window.
Claire felt the ice settle in her stomach. "Vanessa... you knew about the Geneva wire?"
"Marcus," Vanessa commanded quietly, not looking at Claire. "Clear the room. Now."
Marcus hung up his phone, nodded to the two federal marshals, and escorted them out, closing the heavy steel door behind him and standing guard outside the frosted glass.
Vanessa turned back to Claire, kneeling once more, her expression fraught with twenty years of buried, agonizing trauma.
"When I was sixteen," Vanessa whispered, her voice shaking, "I broke into father’s private study during the annual audit. I found the bank statements from December 2004. There was a wire transfer of five million dollars to an escrow account registered to a holding company called *Helios Aviation* in Geneva. The authorization signature belonged to Eleanor Whitmore."
Claire felt as though the floor had vanished beneath her feet. "Why? Why would our mother pay five million dollars to an airfield the exact night her three-month-old infant was stolen?"
"I asked her," Vanessa said, a tear finally escaping her eye and rolling down her bruised cheek. "I confronted her on the anniversary of your disappearance. She slapped me across the face so hard my lip split. She burned the statement in the fireplace right in front of me. And then she said: *'Some truths do not belong in the light, Vanessa. If you ever speak of that wire again, you will destroy this family forever.'*"
Claire stood up, shedding the hospital blanket as if it were on fire. "She lied to us. In the catacombs, at the hospital... she acted like the grieving, broken mother who had been locked in a tomb for twenty years. But she was part of it! She knew who took me!"
"We don't know that for sure," Vanessa said, rising quickly, trying to calm her. "Ethan was murdered because he was about to talk. That means whoever is pulling the strings is terrified of what Ethan knew. If Mother was part of the conspiracy, why did Ethan lock her in that Hudson Valley vault for years?"
Claire turned toward the door, her eyes blazing with a mixture of heartbreak and lethal determination.

"There is only one person who can answer that," Claire said, her voice turning to steel. "And we are going to get the truth out of her tonight."
