Chapter 8 - Blood and Badges

The flight paramedic’s sterile gloved hands worked with blinding, professional speed against the cold backdrop of the bathroom floor.

"Claire, look at me! Look into my eyes right now!" Mara ordered, grabbing my face between her hands and forcing my eyes open.

"You did your job, you survived the drop, and you gathered every piece of evidence we needed to bury these monsters," Mara yelled over the noise.

"Now you push for your child! Push with everything you have left in your soul, Claire Vance!"

A primal, deafening roar tore from the depths of my bleeding chest as another colossal wave of uterine contractions seized my body.

I curled forward, gripping Mara’s Kevlar vest with fingers that felt like iron talons, pouring every drop of my remaining life into that single push.

The burning sensation was beyond human comprehension, as though molten lead was being poured directly through my pelvis.

"The head is clear! Shoulder dystocia resolved! Keep pushing, Claire, one more time!" the paramedic screamed.

I threw my head back, screaming my defiance against the ceiling of the Bellacourt estate, against the family that had tried to bury me alive.

With a warm, rushing release of pressure, my baby was delivered directly into the waiting sterile blue towels of the paramedic.

For three agonizing, breathless seconds, the entire bathroom fell into a silence so profound you could hear the blood dripping onto the floor.

Then, a sharp, ragged, sputtering cry echoed off the marble walls, growing louder and stronger until it filled the entire room.

"We have a boy! He’s breathing, Claire! He’s breathing on his own!" the paramedic announced, his voice cracking with pure emotion.

Tears flooded my eyes as they quickly suctioned his tiny airway, wrapped him in silver thermal blankets, and laid him directly against my bare chest.

He was tiny, premature, and red-faced with fury, but his little chest rose and fell with rhythmic, stubborn life.

"My sweet boy... my strong little boy," I sobbed, kissing his wet forehead as my trembling fingers counted all ten of his tiny fingers.

"We need to move them to the life-flight chopper immediately for neonatal intensive care," the second medic insisted, lifting me onto the gurney.

They strapped me down with my baby secured against my heart, rolling the gurney rapidly out of the ruined bathroom and down the hallway.

As the gurney burst through the double doors into the grand ballroom, the entire room of three hundred high-society guests fell dead silent.

Armed federal marshals stood along every wall, their weapons drawn while white-collar criminals stood frozen against their banquet chairs.

In the center of the dance floor, Victoria Bellacourt was on her knees in handcuffs, her hair disheveled and her makeup ruined by tears of rage.

Beside her stood Evan, his hands cuffed behind his back, staring at me with the vacant, ruined eyes of a dead man walking.

As my gurney passed within three feet of where my husband was detained, I raised my right hand from the blanket.

Between my bloody, trembling fingers, I held up the tarnished silver badge of the State Attorney General’s Fraud Task Force.

"Evan Bellacourt," I whispered, my voice carrying across the silent, terrified ballroom with lethal clarity.

"And I am the one who personally signed the warrant."
