Chapter 6 - The Storm Descends

The thunderous downdraft of the helicopter’s rotor blades hit the massive glass skylights of the main ballroom with terrifying force.
Inside the reception hall, the three hundred elite guests stopped their conversations, looking up in sheer confusion as chandeliers began to sway wildly.
Crystal wine glasses shook on linen-covered tables, sending vintage red wine spilling across white tablecloths like pools of fresh blood.
Celeste stopped mid-sentence with her champagne flute raised, staring at the ceiling as the chandeliers clinked against one another.
"What on earth is that awful noise?" Celeste demanded, looking around the room for the event coordinator.
"Evan, did you hire some vulgar surprise fireworks display without telling me?" she snapped, turning toward her pale brother.
Evan didn't answer because his eyes were locked on the panoramic glass terrace doors that overlooked the private vineyard drive.
Through the twilight darkness, a blinding column of blue, red, and amber emergency strobe lights was tearing through the vineyard gates.
Not one or two local patrol cars.
Dozens of heavy, armored tactical transport vehicles were smashing directly through the wrought-iron security barriers of the estate.
The private security guards Victoria had paid twenty thousand dollars to protect the event were tossed aside like rag dolls.
Victoria’s face turned into a mask of pure aristocratic rage as she marched toward the terrace doors, her diamond jewelry flashing.
"Who authorized this absolute circus on my private property?" Victoria shrieked, waving her manicured hands at her head of security.
"Get the chief of police on the phone this instant! I want these trespassers arrested and dragged off my land in chains!"
Her head of security stumbled backward through the terrace doors, his tactical radio screeching with panicked, overlapping shouts.
"Mrs. Bellacourt, it's not the local police!" the security guard stammered, his face drained of all color.
"It's the State Attorney General’s Special Operations Division, backed by federal marshals and Homeland Security tactical teams!"
Before Victoria could process the words, the heavy reinforced glass doors of the grand ballroom were violently kicked off their hinges.
"State Law Enforcement! Nobody move! Stay where you are!" a booming voice echoed through tactical megaphones.
Twenty heavily armed tactical operators in midnight-black body armor flooded into the glittering ballroom, assault rifles raised in low-ready positions.
High-society women screamed in horror, diving beneath tables and knocking over five-thousand-dollar floral arrangements.
Politicians and federal judges threw their hands into the air, freezing in place as tactical laser sights painted the walls of the venue.
Evan backed away from the bar, his legs shaking so violently that his vintage champagne glass slipped from his fingers and shattered on the floor.
Leading the phalanx of armored agents was Special Agent Mara Voss, wearing a Kevlar tactical vest bearing the gold badge of the State.
Her face was carved from pure, unyielding granite, her piercing eyes locking directly onto the trembling figure of Victoria Bellacourt.
"Where is she?" Mara demanded, her voice echoing over the screaming guests like a crack of thunder.
"How dare you storm into my daughter’s wedding like common thugs!" Victoria screamed back, attempting to use her social stature as armor.
"Do you have any idea who I am? I personally fund the governor’s entire election campaign!"
Mara didn't even slow her stride as she closed the distance between them, stepping over shattered crystal without blinking.
She closed in on Victoria, stopping mere inches from the matriarch's face, her hand resting on the grip of her service sidearm.
"I know exactly who you are, Victoria," Mara said with venom that silenced the entire ballroom.

"You are a pathetic money launderer who just locked a state agent in premature labor inside a bathroom."
"And if my agent or her child dies tonight, I will personally charge you with felony murder before the sun rises."
