Chapter 5 - The Legal TsunamiMr. Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his sharp eyes scanning the chaotic ballroom before locking onto Brooke, who was still kneeling on the floor in her ruined dress.

"Good evening, everyone," Mr. Sterling’s deep, resonant voice carried effortlessly across the room. He stepped forward, pulling a thick leather portfolio from under his arm. "I take it the prenuptial annulment notification has been delivered?"
Ethan nodded, slipping his hands into his trouser pockets. "Just handled it, Sterling. But it looks like we have an even bigger matter to discuss regarding corporate liability and asset recovery."
Brooke scrambled to her feet, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks. "What are you talking about? Ethan, you can't sick your lawyers on me! We were engaged!"
"Engaged to a fraud, Brooke," Mr. Sterling said smoothly, opening his leather portfolio. He pulled out several crisp sheets of financial paper. "My firm has been conducting a routine forensic audit of Ethan’s business accounts over the past month in preparation for the wedding settlement. In doing so, we uncovered some... interesting discrepancies."
Helen stopped crying instantly, her eyes darting toward the attorney with naked panic. "Discrepancies? What discrepancies?"
" embezzlement, tax fraud, and corporate identity theft," Mr. Sterling recited calmly, as if reading a grocery list. "It appears that over the last twenty-four hours, a series of unauthorized wire transfers totaling four hundred and fifty thousand dollars were funneled from Ethan’s corporate sponsorship fund into an overseas account registered in the Cayman Islands."
The ballroom erupted into renewed chaos. Several wedding planners and caterers began whispering frantically among themselves, wondering if they were ever going to get paid.
Mr. Sterling looked directly at Helen. "And according to our digital forensics team, the IP address used to authorize those wire transfers belongs to a laptop registered to Helen Bennett—using stolen executive credentials."
Helen let out a shriek that sounded like a wounded animal. "That's a lie! You framed me! You're trying to ruin us!"
"The digital footprint is immutable, Mrs. Bennett," Mr. Sterling said with a chilling smile. "The federal authorities have already been notified. Given the amount involved, wire fraud across state and international lines carries a federal prison sentence of up to twenty years."
Brooke spun around to face her mother, her eyes wide with absolute betrayal. "Mom? You stole from him? You stole four hundred thousand dollars right before my wedding?!"
"I did it for us!" Helen screamed, losing all remaining shreds of composure. She pointed a shaking finger at me. "I did it because that little beggar girl was going to inherit everything! We needed security! We needed to ensure our lifestyle wouldn't vanish overnight!"
May you like
"Security?" Grandma Rose's voice cut through Helen's hysteria like a whip. "You had three homes, a fleet of luxury cars, and a monthly allowance that most families live on for a year. Your greed is boundless, Helen. And now, you will pay for it."
Mr. Sterling nodded to the two security guards flanking him. They stepped forward, their massive frames blocking the main exit. "Mrs. Bennett, you are welcome to wait here for the local police, or you can accompany us to the holding room downstairs. The choice is yours."
