Chapter 25 - The Trigger Beneath the Glass

Elena’s eyes darted frantically around the ruined boardroom. The six private guards lay incapacitated on the drenched marble. The corporate trustees had crawled beneath the heavy conference table, whimpering in terror.

The rain lashed across the penthouse floor, soaking Elena’s bespoke cream suit, turning it gray and clingy.

“You’re pathetic, Grace,” Elena hissed, though her voice wavered with an unmistakable tremor of fear. “You think you’re holding the gun? You think this ends with you walking away to your little fantasy cabin?”

“Where are the Genesis codes, Elena?” Nathan demanded, stepping up beside Grace, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. “Cancel the retrieval orders for Lily. Sign the full parental termination document right now, or you leave this building in a body bag.”

Elena began to laugh—a sharp, manic sound that rose above the sound of the wind.

“Did you really think I came to this penthouse alone, Nathan? Did you really think I trusted lawyers and mercenary guards?”

Elena slowly reached into her suit jacket. Grace instantly cocked the hammer of the pistol with a crisp, terrifying *CLICK*.

“Take your hand out slowly!” Grace warned.

Elena pulled her hand out—not holding a weapon, but a small, illuminated digital monitor linked to a real-time video feed.

She turned the screen toward Grace and Nathan.

Nathan’s heart stopped.

The live video feed showed the interior of a nursery room—Whispering Pines.

Sitting on the edge of Lily’s bed was an operative wearing a black balaclava. In his lap was a digital countdown clock, glowing red: **00:03:45... 00:03:44...**

Beside the clock, resting directly beneath the wooden frame of Lily’s bed, was an olive-drab military demolition charge wired to a remote pressure release.

“Lily isn't with your little friend Mrs. Alvarez,” Elena whispered, her face twisting into a demonic sneer. “My second strike team intercepted your diversion van three hours ago on the state highway. Lily has been back at Whispering Pines for forty minutes, sleeping peacefully in her bed.”

Grace gasped, the pistol shaking violently in her grip. “You monster... SHE’S A CHILD! SHE’S YOUR OWN FLESH AND BLOOD!”

“She’s my ticket to fifty billion dollars!” Elena screamed into the storm. “The detonator is tied to my biometric pulse monitor on my wrist! If my heart stops—if you shoot me, Grace—the signal drops, and that entire lakehouse turns into a crater of ash and bone with Lily inside it!”

The countdown on the screen ticked down: **00:02:18... 00:02:17...**

“Now,” Elena snarled, stepping forward, thrusting the parental transfer deed onto the wet table before Nathan. “Sign the father's consent form, Nathan. Transfer full custody of the Vance heir to me. Step onto that balcony, and jump. Both of you.”

Nathan looked at the timer. Two minutes. There was no way to reach Whispering Pines. No helicopter could cover seventy miles in one hundred and twenty seconds.

Grace’s arms began to drop, the gun lowering as tears of sheer, hopeless agony flooded her vision. “Nathan... our baby... she’s going to kill our baby...”

Nathan looked at Elena. Then, his eyes dropped to the biometric monitor strapped to Elena’s left wrist.

A memory—a razor-sharp memory from his father’s classified Cygnus protocol—ignited in Nathan’s mind.

*“The Genesis system requires an uninterrupted closed-loop signal to maintain the fail-safe... but the Sinclair Tower’s primary communications array has an EMP surge breaker on the exterior roof.”*

The countdown hit: **00:00:59... 00:00:58...**

Elena smiled, pulling a diamond-encrusted fountain pen from her pocket and sliding it toward Nathan. “Tick-tock, Daddy. Choose: your life... or hers.”

Nathan locked eyes with Grace. In that split-second exchange of glances, Grace saw the terrifying, reckless calculation in his eyes.

Nathan didn't reach for the pen.

Instead, with blinding speed, Nathan grabbed Grace’s gun, aimed it directly at the floor beneath Elena’s feet—where the multi-ton structural glass of the penthouse met the fifty-story drop into the Manhattan abyss—and fired three hollow-point rounds into the reinforced pane.

The glass spider-webbed with a deafening crack.

The wind roared as the entire floor beneath them began to buckle into empty air.

“NATHAN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Elena screamed in absolute horror as the floor tilted violently downward.

Nathan caught Grace by the collar of her jacket with his left hand, his boots sliding toward the edge, while his right hand lunged forward to grab Elena’s wrist—and the ticking detonator.

*“HOLD ON!”* Nathan roared into the void.

And beneath their feet, the glass shattered completely.
