Chapter 20 - The Safe Under the Floorboards

They drove until the transmission began to smoke, finally abandoning the vehicle in a disused quarry three miles off the secondary highway. Under the cover of dusk, carrying Lily on his shoulders with Grace clutching his arm, Nathan led them on foot to an overgrown hunting cabin buried deep inside the state game lands.
Inside, the cabin was dark, smelling of cedar and dry pine needles. Nathan barricaded the heavy oak door with an iron timber, pulled the blackout curtains shut, and lit a single kerosene lantern on the rough-hewn table.
Lily was exhausted, curled up in an armchair beneath an old wool blanket, her thumb stuck in her mouth as sleep finally claimed her traumatized little body.
Grace stood beside the table, her hands shaking violently as she watched Nathan pull up three floorboards near the stone fireplace.
Beneath the floor sat a matte-black steel tactical locker. Nathan entered a six-digit code and scanned his thumbprint. The heavy lid popped open with a pneumatic hiss.
Inside were three new European passports, stacks of bundled Swiss francs, encrypted satellite radios, and a sealed manila file marked: *PROJECT CYGNUS – CLASSIFIED 2018*.
“What is that?” Grace asked, her voice cracking. “Nathan... what was your father doing before we met?”
Nathan pulled out the file. His hands, usually steady as stone, were trembling.
“My father had a degenerative heart condition,” Nathan said quietly, staring at the file. “He knew he wouldn't live long enough to see his empire merge with the Sinclair Group. But the merger contract had a clause: the Vance bloodline *had* to produce a legitimate heir with genetic compatibility to the Sinclair lineage to unlock the final fifty-billion-dollar trust.”
Grace put a hand over her mouth. “Heir? But you were engaged to Victoria Sinclair!”
“Victoria was sterile,” Nathan whispered, turning the first page of the dossier. “The accident she had in Switzerland eight years ago destroyed her reproductive system. It was kept out of the press. So my father and Victoria’s father devised a secret protocol. They used an anonymous surrogate program. They harvested genetic material... but they needed an egg with specific European noble markers to satisfy the old family charter.”
He turned the page. Pasted inside was a medical intake photo of a woman from six years ago.
Nathan stopped breathing.
Grace leaned forward, squinting through the dim lantern light at the black-and-white photo.
Her knees buckled. She would have hit the floorboards if Nathan hadn’t caught her by the waist.
The woman in the classified photo—the biological egg donor listed as *Subject Cygnus-01*—was not a stranger.

It was Grace’s older sister, Elena. The sister who had vanished seven years ago and was officially declared dead after a drowning accident in the Hudson River.
