Chapter 17 - THE LABYRINTH BENEATH THE CAMPUS

The subterranean network beneath Columbia University was built over a century ago—a web of brick tunnels, steam pipes, and forgotten archive vaults running beneath the quad. It was damp, pitch-black, and smelled of rust and mineral decay.

Daniel slammed his sedan into the curb right in front of Low Memorial Library, abandoning the vehicle with the door hanging open and the engine still running. Campus security sirens were wailing across the plaza, but the guards were disorganized, searching the outdoor courtyards in the torrential rain.

Daniel plunged down the basement stairs near the construction scaffolding, following the yellow hazard lights strung along the concrete ceiling.

"Noah!" Daniel roared into the cavernous tunnel. "NOAH!"

His voice bounced off the dripping brickwork, swallowed by the deafening hiss of a high-pressure steam valve somewhere in the dark.

Ahead of him, thirty yards down a narrow corridor lined with abandoned library shelving, two figures were locked in a violent struggle.

Noah was on his back against a rack of steel shelving, his hands clamped around the wrists of a young man wearing a soaked grey hoodie. The attacker had pinned Noah against the metal frame, his face contorted in a mask of absolute, psychotic rage. In the boy’s right hand, the steel tire iron was raised, trembling inches above Noah’s face.

"You took everything from us!" the boy screamed, his voice cracking with adolescent hysteria. "My father died in a Swiss prison hospital because of you and your father! My mother spent ten years in a cage while you lived in a mansion off my family’s money!"

"Julian, stop!" Noah gasped, his boots scraping frantically against the wet floor for leverage. "They lied to you! Marcus didn't build that company! He tried to kill my mother!"

"LIAR!"

Julian brought the iron down.

Daniel moved with a speed he didn't know his fifty-year-old body possessed. He launched himself across the final ten feet of wet concrete, hitting Julian’s torso with the full force of his shoulder.

The three of them crashed violently onto the concrete floor, the tire iron clattering loudly across the floorboards into the dark.

Julian scrambled up like a wounded animal, his hood falling back.

Daniel pushed Noah behind him, rising slowly to his feet, breathing heavily, his clothes soaked through with muddy water.

Under the buzzing yellow maintenance bulb, Daniel finally saw Julian’s face.

The breath caught in Daniel’s throat.

The boy didn't look like Marcus. He didn't look like Vanessa.

May you like

He had the unmistakable, piercing green eyes and high cheekbones of Claire.
