Chapter 14 - THE LAWYER WHO SIGNED IN BLOOD

The offices of Vance, Mercer & Cole occupied the top two floors of an ivory stone skyscraper in Boston’s financial district. By 1:00 PM, Daniel had driven back into the city, leaving Anna with Noah under the protection of a high-end private security firm that Daniel had retained within thirty minutes of hearing the tape.

Daniel didn't call ahead. He didn't schedule an appointment through Arthur's secretary.

When the elevator chimed on the thirty-second floor, Daniel bypassed the receptionist with long, aggressive strides. The young woman behind the marble reception counter scrambled out of her chair. "Mr. Sterling! Wait, Mr. Vance is in a closed-door partner meeting—"

Daniel pushed open the heavy double doors of the corner boardroom without knocking.

Six senior partners turned in shock. At the head of the conference table, an immaculate leather binder open before him, sat Arthur Vance. He was seventy-one years old, with silver hair, impeccably tailored Italian suits, and the serene, untouchable expression of an old-money aristocrat who had spent a lifetime burying other people's bodies beneath nondisclosure agreements.

Arthur looked up, his pale blue eyes narrowing slightly before his face smoothed into an easy, paternal smile. "Daniel. My boy. We weren't expecting you until the annual trust review next month. What on earth has happened?"

Daniel didn't speak. He walked directly to Arthur’s end of the table, pulled the plastic evidence bag containing the scratched photograph from his coat, and slapped it down onto the glass surface right between Arthur's Montblanc pen and his bone china teacup.

The silence that fell over the boardroom was suffocating.

"Everyone out," Daniel said. His voice was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, vibrating violence that made the other five partners instantly push back their chairs.

"Now, wait just a moment," one of the junior partners began, standing up defensively. "You can't just storm into an executive—"

"I said get out," Daniel snarled, not taking his eyes off Arthur. "Or the next people coming through those doors will be the Massachusetts State Police with a warrant for forty years of offshore bank records."

The partners looked between Daniel and Arthur. Arthur raised a single, calm hand. "Give us ten minutes, gentlemen. It seems my godson has had a stressful morning."

The doors clicked shut behind them.

Arthur picked up his teacup, took a measured sip, and set it down. Then he cast a brief, dispassionate glance at the photograph on the glass.

"A cassette tape and an old picture," Arthur said quietly, without looking up. "Claire always was melodramatic when she panicked. She didn't understand the realities of corporate finance. She thought business could be run like a Sunday school."

"You were in the car," Daniel said, his fists clenching until the knuckles turned stark white. "Three days before she died. You were in the car with my wife."

"I was trying to save her, Daniel," Arthur replied, his voice chillingly reasonable. "I was trying to convince her to hand over the flash drive she took from Marcus's safe. I told her that Marcus was unstable. I told her that bringing in Vanessa to siphon your personal accounts was Marcus's idea, not mine. I was merely the custodian of the transactions."

"You let her die!" Daniel roared, slamming both palms down on the mahogany table, sending the bone china cup clattering against the saucer. "You knew the car was sabotaged!"

"I didn't sabotage anything!" Arthur hissed, his veneer finally cracking, his pale eyes flashing with sudden, venomous intensity. "Marcus had his own people. By the time Claire called me, it was already too late! She was going to blow up the entire Sterling empire to prove a moral point! And do you know who paid for your wedding, Daniel? Who covered the multimillion-dollar shortfall when your supply chain collapsed in 2012? It wasn't your brilliant leadership. It was Marcus’s Zurich funds, funneled through Vanessa’s shell corporations!"

Arthur leaned forward, his finger tapping the table. "You thought that wedding was about you and a spoiled socialite? Vanessa was leverage! Marcus wanted Noah legally separated from the bloodline trust because Marcus had another child. A child you never knew about."

Daniel froze. "What did you say?"

May you like

Arthur smiled a cold, thin, miserable smile. "Vanessa wasn't just Marcus's associate, Daniel. She was his secret wife. And she was pregnant when she dumped that cake over your son."
