Chapter 6 - The Unscheduled Inspection

Luke paused at the base of the concrete steps, adjusting his grip on the crutches. His posture was ramrod straight, his expression an unreadable mix of fierce determination and deep gratitude. Flanking him closely were Master Chief Vance and Chief Miller, both wearing dress white covers and chests heavy with decades of service medals.
Principal Henderson hurried down the steps, half-stumbling in his haste. "Good morning, Commander—Lieutenant. I'm Principal Henderson. Is there an emergency? Has something happened?"
Luke offered a calm, steady smile that instantly disarmed the panicked educator. "No emergency, Principal Henderson. Quite the opposite. We're here on a very specific mission authorized by Naval Special Warfare Command."
Before the principal could process the statement, the heavy double doors behind him pushed open, and a wave of confused middle school students flooded into the hallway to see what was happening. Among them, walking slowly with his heavy backpack slung over one shoulder, was a very bewildered thirteen-year-old boy.
Leo Miller froze on the top step.
His eyes widened to the size of saucers as he looked down the corridor of Navy SEALs standing at rigid attention. Then his gaze locked onto Luke Harris, standing at the bottom of the steps with his crutches and his dress blues.
"Leo Miller," Luke called out, his rich, gravelly voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard.
Every head in the courtyard turned toward the doorway. Students gasped, whispering excitedly as they pointed at the legendary uniforms and the veteran addressing their classmate.
Leo swallowed hard, his legs feeling suddenly like lead as he stepped forward, walking slowly down the concrete steps until he stood face-to-face with the man he had helped at the Dallas airport less than forty-eight hours ago.
"S-sir?" Leo squeaked, his voice cracking slightly.
Luke stopped a foot away from the boy. He looked down at Leo with an expression of profound respect that few adults ever afforded a thirteen-year-old.
"You missed your flight on Saturday, Leo," Luke said, his voice echoing off the brick walls of the school. "You gave up your ticket, your schedule, and your comfort to help a stranger navigate an airport because you saw someone who needed a hand."

"I... I just wanted to help you find your brother," Leo mumbled, looking down at his sneakers, suddenly feeling entirely unworthy of the attention.
"You didn't just help a man find his brother," Master Chief Vance stepped forward, his voice booming with authority. "You embodied the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. And in the Navy, when someone has our back, we make damn sure we have theirs."
