Chapter 8 - The Center Ring

The booming roar of the crowd shook the concrete beneath our feet as the processional began.
The massive stadium band struck up a thundering brass anthem that reverberated off the steel rafters of the arena.
Eighty thousand people rose to their feet in unison, applauding the slow march of the academic and military dignitaries.
I walked with measured, disciplined strides, my eyes fixed straight ahead, ignoring the dizzying blur of flashing cameras.
We climbed the wide carpeted stairs onto the colossal central platform erected at the fifty-yard line.
The stage was decorated with towering American flags, golden academy eagles, and the rich velvet banners of both prestigious institutions.
I took my designated seat in the center of the front row, directly beside the Academy Superintendent and the University Chancellor.
Down in the front VIP box, barely forty yards from the stage, Eleanor Mitchell was still frantically scanning the student rows for Derek.
Arthur had his camera raised, completely focused on the student entrance, zooming in on Derek’s dark cap.
Neither of them even bothered to glance at the military officers taking their seats on the main dais.
To Eleanor, the officers on stage were just ceremonial window dressing, meaningless props to make Derek’s university look grander.
She adjusted her cream blazer, her face radiating smug, untouchable superiority.
The University Chancellor stepped to the podium, delivering brief, polished welcoming remarks to the roaring stadium.
Then, Lieutenant General Vance stood up, adjusting the microphone with commanding grace.
The entire stadium quieted instantly under the sheer weight of his presence.
"Honored guests, faculty, proud families, and graduates," Vance began, his voice echoing from every massive loudspeaker.
"Today is a historic convergence of academic excellence and military sacrifice."
"Every year, our academy chooses a single graduate whose extraordinary bravery, strategic intellect, and unyielding character embody the highest ideals of our nation."
In the front row, Eleanor checked her diamond watch, looking visibly bored by the military rhetoric.
She whispered something to Arthur, waving her hand dismissively toward the stage, eager for the diplomas to begin.
"This year," General Vance continued, his voice rising with profound emotional resonance, "our Guest of Honor is someone who has shattered every expectation."
"She walked our parade fields twenty years ago, standing alone without fanfare, and carved her name into military history through sheer, unbending resolve."
Arthur slowly lowered his camera, a strange look of confusion crossing his weathered face.
"She has led troops in combat, commanded strategic intelligence battalions, and earned the Bronze Star for valor under enemy fire."
Eleanor frowned, tilting her head slightly, clearly irritated that this soldier’s introduction was taking up Derek’s precious time.
"Ladies and gentlemen," General Vance declared, his voice booming like thunder across the stadium.
