Chapter 6 - A Twisted Convergence

A week before the grand ceremony, Eleanor Mitchell’s digital megaphone went into overdrive.

She posted constant updates from first-class airport lounges, showing off champagne flutes with Arthur grinning sheepishly in the background.

"On our way to the East Coast to witness our son Derek achieve the greatness he was born for!" she proclaimed to her social circle.

"Two years of sacrifice have led to this moment. Derek is receiving his MBA from the most prestigious program in the country!"

She posted pictures of the five-star hotel suite they had booked in the city center, completely unbothered by the astronomical cost.

For Derek’s weekend, no expense was spared, no luxury denied, and no bragging right left unexploited.

They took Derek to private dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants, uploading photos of expensive wine bottles and artisanal steaks.

My phone remained utterly silent throughout their extravagant pilgrimage.

Eleanor did not even think to ask if I was still stationed on the East Coast.

She did not text to check if I was within driving distance of their five-star hotel.

To her, I was an invisible background detail in the glorious epic of Derek’s ascension.

Three days before the event, my cousin Clara, who had always maintained a quiet friendship with me, sent me a screenshot of a family group chat.

Eleanor had written a long, dramatic message to our extended relatives.

"Arthur and I have bought front-row VIP tickets right behind the chancellor's podium for Derek’s graduation."

"We want to make sure everyone sees the Mitchell family front and center when Derek walks the stage."

"It breaks my heart that Sarah couldn't find a respectable career to give us a moment like this, but at least Derek has fulfilled our legacy."

I read the screenshot while sitting in my staff car, my aide-de-camp driving me toward the staging base near the stadium.

I felt no anger, no sadness, and no desire for petty vengeance.

All I felt was a cold, crystalline sense of purpose.

"Everything okay, Colonel?" my driver asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"Everything is proceeding exactly as it should, Sergeant," I answered calmly, looking out over the rolling highway.

The next morning, military police units began securing the stadium perimeter in coordination with regional authorities.

Because a senior military delegation and top government officials were attending, security protocols were raised to the highest level.

Secret service personnel and military brass filled the staging hotels, yet Eleanor Mitchell remained completely oblivious to the real reason for the armed convoys.

She assumed the military presence was merely an annoying traffic obstruction for Derek’s big day.

She even posted a complaint on her profile about "obnoxious army trucks blocking the valet entrance" of her luxury hotel.

I smiled as I read her complaint from inside the secure VIP briefing room.

She had spent her whole life dismissing the armed forces as an uncivilized trade, completely blind to the power that moved beneath her feet.

The countdown had begun, and the Mitchell family was marching directly toward the most devastating awakening of their lives.
