Chapter 27 - The Forty-Million Dollar Lie

A flash of electric-blue lightning ripped across the floor of the barn above.

Through the subterranean monitors, the entire screen bloomed with white-hot electrical static. The four hundred and eighty volts of commercial current surged through the submerged copper conduits buried under the concrete slab, discharging straight into the wet slush and metal debris covering the ground.

The mercenary touching the iron frame of the hatch never even had time to scream.

The electrical arc picked him up and threw him ten feet through the air, his body seizing in mid-flight as the high-voltage charge discharged through his tactical armor, blowing out the battery packs on his night-vision gear in twin pops of blue flame. He hit the concrete apron motionless, smoke pouring from the seams of his combat boots.

Elena shrieked as the current snapped along the steel rebar in the floor, throwing her backward into the snowy mud outside the barn doors. Her white shearling coat caught fire along the hem, and she rolled frantically in the snowbank, screaming curses into the blizzard.

The main county transformer on the ridge let out a deafening, thunderous *CRACK*, followed by a shower of emerald sparks that lit up the storm like a dying star.

The power to the entire valley died instantly.

The lights in my bunker flickered out, plunging me into absolute pitch blackness.

For three terrifying heartbeats, there was only the sound of my own ragged breathing and the distant roar of the storm.

Then, with a low mechanical whine, the bunker’s dedicated diesel generator roared to life behind the rear partition. Emergency amber LED strips along the baseboards flared back on, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete walls.

The master console beeped.

On the main terminal, the locked cipher prompt vanished, replaced by an automatic administrative override screen that had been triggered by the high-voltage discharge.

*GRID INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.*

*UNSEALING ARCHIVAL REGISTRATION.*

*DEPOSITORY ACCOUNT: SOVEREIGN TRUST / VANCE ESTATE.*

Text began to scroll across the screen at blinding speed—bank routing numbers, corporate registration documents, and foreign asset ledgers.

I stared at the numbers in disbelief.

Ethan hadn't stolen forty million dollars from the family account. He had stolen forty million dollars that my father had intentionally funneled through an offshore dummy corporation called *Caldwell Logistics* eighteen months before he died.

Arthur Vance had known Ethan was embezzling money long before I did.

My father had deliberately dangled that forty million dollars like a piece of poisoned meat, knowing that Ethan’s insatiable greed would eventually drive him to steal it. And by stealing it, Ethan had automatically triggered a series of cross-border financial alerts that flagged him—and anyone he transferred the money to—as an international money-laundering operative for the Dumas syndicate.

My father hadn't been the victim of Ethan’s betrayal.

My father had built the trap, baited it with forty million dollars of syndicate money he had seized during his intelligence career, and waited for Ethan to choke on it.

Ethan was never the architect. He was never even a thief.

He was the canary my father had sent into the coal mine to draw the Dumas family out of the shadows.

And it had worked.
