Chapter 25 - The Italian Connection Unmasked

Ethan Caldwell sat half-naked on the cold terracotta tiles of the Villa Bellissima, shivering so violently his teeth clicked like castanets.

Outside the arched French doors, the rain was sweeping across the Tuscan hills, turning the olive groves into rivers of red mud. But inside the master bedroom—the very suite he had rented for twenty-five thousand dollars a week using my father’s embezzled retirement funds—there was only blood, terror, and the stench of burnt plastic.

His hands were zip-tied behind his back, hooked around the cast-iron pipe of an antique water radiator. His left eye was swollen shut, a deep purple hematoma blooming across his cheekbone where the butt of a Beretta had connected three hours earlier.

Standing over him was a man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, calmly drinking espresso from an antique porcelain cup.

"Please," Ethan whimpered, his voice cracking into high, pathetic sobs. "I gave you the routing numbers! I transferred the thirty million from Clara’s family trust into the Geneva account! I did everything Chloe told me to do!"

The man in the suit—whose Italian police dossier identified him as Vittorio Dumas, senior partner of the Dumas Syndicate and Elena’s uncle—didn't even look down. He set his cup on the saucer with a soft, aristocratic clink.

"You gave us forty million in commercial paper, Mr. Caldwell," Vittorio said, speaking English with a fluid, clipped British accent. "Which our banks liquidated in twenty minutes. That was your fee. That was the breadcrumbs we fed the dog so he would lead us to the master’s cellar."

"I don't know what cellar you're talking about!" Ethan shrieked, urine spreading across the front of his designer linen trousers. "Clara is a schoolteacher! Her father was an old lunatic who worked for the state! There’s nothing there! We were going to build a golf resort on that land!"

Vittorio sighed, pulling an ivory-handled pocketknife from his vest. He walked over to Ethan and knelt, pressing the cold steel tip just beneath Ethan’s right earlobe.

"You spent twenty years sleeping in the bed of Arthur Vance’s daughter," Vittorio murmured with genuine disgust. "You shared a breakfast table with one of the chief cryptographic architects of the Western hemisphere. And all you saw was an old house and forty acres to subdivide for strip malls."

"I... I can get Clara on the phone," Ethan pleaded, sweat and tears stinging his broken eye. "She loves me! She took me back twice when I cheated on her before! She’s weak, she’s sentimental! If I tell her Emma is in danger, she’ll do anything! She’ll sign whatever you want!"

Vittorio smiled, a flash of predatory white teeth. "Your wife is currently blowing up my elite extraction team with liquid nitrogen and grain dust, Mr. Caldwell. She is not weak. She is her father's daughter. You, on the other hand, are an embarrassing mistake that has reached the end of its utility."

Vittorio stood up, folded the knife, and gestured to the two guards standing by the bedroom door.

"The Carabinieri are already thirty minutes out," Vittorio said, checking his gold watch. "Pack the servers. Put Mr. Caldwell in the trunk of the Alfa Romeo. If Elena secures the ledger in Pennsylvania, we throw him into the Arno River with a tractor battery around his neck. If she fails... we leave him for the Italian federal anti-terrorist police to explain why thirty million dollars of syndicate money passed through his personal tax ID."

"No! Chloe! Tell Chloe to call me!" Ethan screamed as the two heavies hauled him upward by his armpits, his bare feet dragging across the terracotta floor. "Chloe loves me! We're having a baby!"

Vittorio paused at the door, glancing back with an expression of mild amusement.

"Elena had her tubes tied seven years ago, you miserable clown," Vittorio chuckled. "The ultrasound picture she showed you on the yacht was downloaded from a medical textbook."

The door slammed shut, drowning Ethan’s howling despair in the empty Tuscan rain.
