Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Nathan Crowe

The eruption of sound in the auditorium was deafening. Twelve hundred spectators rose to their feet in a thunderous standing ovation that shook the rafters. Gold confetti rained down from the ceiling, shimmering under the blinding stage lights like falling stars.
Eli Ellis stood at the center of the stage, the newly crowned state champion. Beside him, Ethan walked out from the wings, clapping his brother on the shoulder. They stood together, two unshakeable towers of intellect, looking out over the sea of applause.
Below the stage, the scene was entirely different.
Two state troopers intercepted Nathan Crowe as he tried to flee down the side corridor.
“Mr. Crowe?” the senior officer asked, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. “You need to come with us. The State Integrity Board has requested your immediate presence in the administrative annex regarding multiple violations of tournament security and attempted commercial fraud.”
“Do you know who I am?” Nathan screamed, his voice hoarse, his spit flying onto the officer’s uniform. “I’m Nathan Crowe! I run Crowe Capital! I demand to see my attorney!”
“You can call your attorney from the holding room, sir,” the officer said calmly, securing his arm with practiced efficiency.
Celeste was already walking ten paces behind, talking frantically into her smartphone: “Cancel the dinner reservations! Call the crisis management team! The press is already streaming this!”
Ten minutes later, inside the administrative press room, a swarm of journalists, photographers, and television cameras were gathered around the podium.
I stood at the center microphone, flanked by Dean Marcus Vance and the State Commissioner of Education. Eli and Ethan stood just behind me, holding the massive, polished brass championship trophy between them.
The flashes from thirty cameras turned the room into a strobe-lit storm.
“Dr. Ellis!” a reporter from the *Daily Chronicle* shouted. “Is it true that the St. Jude contestant was using an illegal signal transmitter funded by Crowe Capital?”
“The forensic logs are being transferred to the State Attorney General’s office as we speak,” I answered calmly, my voice projecting with absolute authority. “Academic integrity is not for sale in this state. No amount of money, no family pedigree, and no corporate influence will ever replace genuine intellectual merit.”
Suddenly, the side doors burst open. Nathan Crowe broke free from an usher’s grip, stumbling into the back of the press room, his eyes wild, his tie hanging loose.
“Wait!” Nathan shouted, pushing toward the cameras. “Listen to me! There’s more to this story! Those boys—Eli and Ethan—they’re Crowes! They carry my blood! I am their father!”
The entire press corps turned their lenses toward Nathan. Microphones swiveled like artillery cannons.
Nathan smiled, a sickening, desperate attempt to reclaim the narrative in front of live television cameras. “Look at them! They got their genius from me! I created them! I’m proud of my sons!”
Ethan stepped forward. He walked to the microphone, gently nudging me aside. He adjusted the stand to his height, looked straight into the central camera lens, and then turned his cold, piercing gaze directly onto Nathan Crowe.
“Thirteen years ago,” Ethan said, his voice ringing through the quiet room, “a man walked out of our home when my brother and I were three years old. He told our mother we were an embarrassment and a financial burden. He traded away his legal rights for four thousand dollars.”
The cameras clicked frantically. Nathan froze, his mouth hanging open.
“Our name is Ellis,” Ethan continued, his tone ice-cold, calm, and devastating. “Everything we know, everything we are, and every achievement we have earned belongs entirely to Dr. Mara Ellis. You didn't create us, Mr. Crowe. You abandoned us. And today, your legacy ended.”
Ethan stepped back from the microphone.
Eli raised the state championship trophy high into the air.
The room erupted into another flash of blinding white light.

Nathan Crowe stood completely alone in the center of the press aisle, surrounded by staring journalists, his reputation shattered, his golden son disgraced, and his real sons lost to him forever.
