Chapter 8 - The Red Pen of Integrity

When the final bell chimed, the atmosphere inside the auditorium was electric. The Jumbotron displayed the ultimate challenge:

**THE GRAND DECATHLON FINALE: MULTI-VARIABLE CRYPTOGRAPHIC DECRYPTION**

*Sudden Death. First to solve claims the State Cup.*

Preston Crowe stood at Podium 1. His face was gray, his eyes bloodshot, his hands twitching against the buzzer. Across from him, Julian Croft stood at Podium 2, looking nervous but steady. At Podium 3, Eli Ellis stood completely still, his hands resting flat against the glass surface.

In the VIP box, Celeste had abandoned her seat, unable to bear the tension. Nathan sat alone, his eyes locked on Eli, his mind unraveling in real-time.

“The final problem is live,” the proctor announced.

A massive, scrolling wall of hexadecimal code appeared on the main screen. It was an encrypted neural cipher—a problem designed by the Department of Defense to test elite cryptographic talent.

The clock began counting down from three minutes: *03:00... 02:59... 02:58...*

Julian immediately began typing on his interface, trying to isolate the primary encryption keys.

Preston stared at the screen, panic overtaking his features. He reached into his blazer pocket, his fingers trembling, and pulled out a small, unauthorized digital stylus—a custom device connected to an external cloud database via a discreet wireless micro-hub Nathan had paid a technician ten thousand dollars to install under Podium 1 during the lunch hour.

From the adjudication dais, I saw the blue indicator light blink twice on my central security console.

A red warning flashed across my terminal:

**UNAUTHORIZED RF FREQUENCY DETECTED: PODIUM 1.**

I didn't hesitate. I didn't flinch. I pressed the override protocol.

Instantly, the massive Jumbotron switched from the cryptographic puzzle to a high-resolution diagnostic display.

A booming alarm echoed through the auditorium:

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

The screen flashed in bright, unmissable scarlet:

**ETHICS VIOLATION DETECTED: CONTESTANT PRESTON CROWE.**

*UNAUTHORIZED EXTERNAL RF TRANSMISSION INTERCEPTED.*

The entire room gasped in unison. Whispers transformed into a deafening roar of outrage.

Preston dropped the stylus onto the glass podium. The microphone picked up the sharp, clattering sound. He looked up at the adjudication dais, seeing my face displayed beside the violation notice.

“No!” Preston screamed into his mic, his voice breaking into hysterical sobs. “It wasn't me! My dad gave it to me! My dad said it was just a backup! He said everyone does it!”

Nathan stood up in the VIP box, his face completely drained of color, his arms flailing as if trying to push the accusations out of the air. “Preston, shut up! Shut your mouth!”

Two state police officers immediately moved down the center aisle, stepping toward Nathan Crowe’s box.

On the stage, while the chaos erupted, Eli Ellis didn't look at Preston. He didn't look at Nathan. He didn't look at the flashing red alarms.

He picked up his official tournament stylus.

With calm, surgical precision, Eli entered a four-step algorithmic inverse into his terminal.

*CHIME.*

The secondary display flashed emerald green:

**WESTRIDGE HIGH: CIPHER SOLVED.**

**TIME: 48.2 SECONDS.**
