Chapter 9 - The Dangerous Proposal

The air between us grew thick, charged with an undeniable, heavy tension that had been building quietly for months.
Dominic’s gaze dropped slowly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes, shining with an intensity that made my heart hammer against my ribs like a trapped bird.
“There is another reason I asked you up here tonight,” Dominic said, his voice unusually hesitant—a rare display of vulnerability from a man who commanded empires.
“What is it?” I whispered.
Dominic reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet jeweler's box. He didn't pop it open immediately. He held it in his palm, looking down at it before meeting my gaze directly.
“When I first met you at L’Étoile, I thought I was hiring the sharpest logistics mind in Baltimore to expand my shipping corridors,” Dominic confessed softly. “I didn't plan on falling in love with you. I didn't plan on letting anyone past my defenses.”
My breath caught in my throat. In love with you.
Before I could process the words, Dominic popped the velvet box open. Resting inside on a bed of dark satin was a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of smaller sapphires that caught the candlelight like captured stars.
“I am not offering you a corporate partnership anymore, Claire,” Dominic said, his voice steady, rich, and absolute. “I am offering you my life, my name, and an empire built on absolute equality and unshakeable truth. Marry me. Rule the harbor by my side, not as my secretary, not as my subordinate, but as my equal partner in every single thing we do.”
I stared at the dazzling ring, then up at the formidable, dangerous man who had torn down my family’s abusive legacy just to give me the throne I had earned.
The frightened, insecure girl who used to hide in the printer paper supply room vanished completely, replaced by a woman who knew her worth down to the very last atom.
“Dominic,” I smiled, my eyes shining with unshed tears of pure, unadulterated joy. “You do realize that if we get married, I’m going to audit your personal expense accounts every single month, right?”
A genuine, brilliant laugh rumbled deep in Dominic’s chest—a sound that only I ever got to hear.

“Audit me all you want, Mrs. Vale,” he murmured, sliding the breathtaking ring onto my finger. “You’ll find every single cent belongs to you anyway.”
When his lips finally met mine, it wasn't just a kiss—it was a sealing of fates, a coronation of two souls who had fought through the darkest shadows and emerged victorious in the blinding light.
