Chapter 10 - Queen of the Harbor

Spring returned to Baltimore six months later with an explosion of emerald-green foliage, crisp ocean breezes, and a glittering harbor that buzzed with the relentless, unstoppable energy of maritime trade.

The wedding was small, breathtaking, and entirely private—held on a scenic coastal cliff overlooking the Atlantic, attended only by our most trusted inner circle, my loyal assistant Maya, and a few select captains of industry who knew better than to cross us.

I wore a simple, elegant ivory silk gown that hugged my curves without apology, my head held high, my shoulders back, stepping forward with absolute confidence.

As I stood beside Dominic beneath a simple floral arbor while the evening sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in ribbons of gold and violet, I looked out over the sparkling expanse of the ocean.

My father was currently wearing an orange jumpsuit in a federal facility five hours away. My stepfamily was working hard for the first time in their lives. And I was standing at the absolute pinnacle of Baltimore’s commercial and underworld empire, holding the hand of the most powerful man on the East Coast—not as a ghost hiding in the printer room, but as the undisputed queen of the harbor.

Dominic lifted my veil, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to my lips as the gathered guests applauded softly.

As we walked down the aisle together into our brilliant, limitless future, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: nobody would ever ask “Which daughter is yours?” ever again. My name was Claire Vale, and I had finally built an empire that could never, ever be locked in a basement again.
