Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Deep

The soft, rhythmic hiss of the hospital ventilator filled the private ICU room as the clock on the wall crept toward three in the morning.
Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion, curled up asleep on a wide leather recliner in the corner of the room, wrapped in a fleece hospital blanket.
Arthur sat on the edge of Elena’s bed, gently stroking the dull, tangled strands of her hair away from her forehead.
The warm-air blanket had restored a faint hint of color to her cheeks, though her face remained painfully gaunt.
Suddenly, Elena’s eyelids fluttered, her breathing quickening beneath the clear plastic oxygen mask.
Her right hand twitched against the crisp white sheets, reaching out blindly until her fingers brushed Arthur’s wrist.
"Arthur..." she gasped, her voice no louder than the scrape of dry leaves across stone.
"I'm here, Elena," Arthur whispered instantly, leaning down until his forehead gently touched hers.
"You're safe, my love. You are in the hospital, Lily is asleep right beside us, and the monster will never touch you again."
Tears pooled in the corners of Elena’s sunken eyes, spilling over her hollow cheeks and wetting the cotton pillowcase.
She pulled the edge of the oxygen mask down with trembling fingers, struggling to articulate the horrors that had lived inside her mind for two agonizing years.
"The yacht... Arthur... the yacht didn't explode by accident," she wheezed, her chest heaving with the effort.
"Don't strain yourself, Elena, we know—" Arthur began softly, but she gripped his wrist with surprising, desperate strength.
"Listen to me!" she choked out, her gaze burning with an intensity that pierced through her physical frailty.
"The captain... Captain Miller... he turned off the emergency transponder twenty miles off the coast of Galveston."
"I smelled the fuel before the blast... it wasn't the engine... it was incendiary charges placed in the lower hull."
Arthur felt a cold sweat prickle along the back of his neck as he listened to his wife recount the day his world had ended.
"He threw me into a life raft before detonating the main salon," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with remembered terror.
"They drugged me... when I woke up, I was on an industrial barge being unloaded in the Houston ship channel."
"And then came Victoria," Arthur said, the name tasting like ash on his tongue.
Elena nodded, a shiver racking her emaciated frame despite the heated blankets.
"She locked me in that concrete room beneath the garden... she said if I ever made a sound, she would murder Lily in her bed."
"She brought a video tablet every Sunday... she showed me live footage of Lily sleeping in her bedroom, just sixty feet above my head."
"Every single week, Arthur... she made me watch our daughter grow up on a digital screen while I starved in the dark."
Arthur felt his soul tear in half, the sheer cruelty of the torture hitting him with the force of a freight train.
To be buried alive beneath the home you built, watching your child on a screen, knowing you were only inches away from the life stolen from you.
"Did she ever mention Julian?" Arthur asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.
Elena closed her eyes, swallowing hard, her throat raw and parched.
"She didn't have to mention him... he came down there, Arthur."
Arthur froze, his heart slamming against his ribs.
"Julian was in that tunnel?" Arthur asked, his breath catching in his throat.
"Three months ago," Elena whispered, her fingernails digging into Arthur’s skin.
"Victoria had the door open... they were arguing about the probate release and the offshore liquidation."
"I heard his voice through the ventilation shaft... that raspy, arrogant laugh he has always had since he was young."
"He told Victoria that once the final corporate merger with the European cartel was ratified, they had to eliminate me permanently."
"He said, 'A dead woman cannot contest an estate transfer once the ink on Arthur's new marriage certificate is dry.'"
The pieces of the conspiracy locked into an undeniable, terrifying whole.
The marriage proposal tonight was never about romance or social status; it was the final legal padlock.
Under Texas probate law and the terms of the Vance family trust, a surviving spouse who remarried within three years surrendered sole administrative trusteeship of minor beneficiaries to the new legal wife.
Once Victoria became Arthur’s legal wife, she would have had joint guardianship over Lily and full administrative access to Elena’s thirty-five-percent controlling trust.
With Victoria holding that block of shares and Julian holding his own fifteen percent, they would have commanded fifty percent of the voting power.
All that remained was to stage an accidental tragedy for Arthur himself, leaving Julian and Victoria as the undisputed rulers of Vance Global.
"She turned the oxygen off tonight, Arthur," Elena sobbed quietly, fresh tears tracking down her temples.
"She came down at nine o'clock in her red dress... she smiled at me, turned the main intake valve clockwise, and set the digital timer for three hours."
"She said by the time the fireworks went off over the pool, my lungs would have given out from carbon dioxide poisoning."
"She said nobody would ever look behind the brown maintenance hatch because the concrete was being permanently tiled over on Monday."
Arthur pulled Elena into his arms, pressing his face into her neck, feeling the fragile flutter of her pulse against his cheek.
"It's over, Elena," Arthur swore against her skin, his tears mixing with hers.
"I heard your knocks. Lily saved your life, and I will tear Julian’s empire down brick by brick before the sun reaches its zenith."
The door to the ICU clicked softly open, and Marcus stepped inside, holding an encrypted military-grade laptop.
"Mr. Vance, we’ve accessed the offshore audit trails from the bank servers in Zurich," Marcus whispered, keeping his distance to avoid waking Lily.
"Julian’s dummy corporation, Crestview Holdings, wired twelve million dollars to an architectural contractor in Mexico who specialized in soundproof underground bunkers in January 2022."
"And there's more," Marcus added, turning the laptop screen toward Arthur.
"Julian just sent an emergency alert to all board members via the corporate server twenty minutes ago."
Arthur gently laid Elena back against the pillows, readjusted her oxygen mask, and walked over to Marcus.
On the glowing display, an email marked with highest executive priority blared across the screen.
The sender was Julian Vance.
The subject line read: Emergency Extraordinary Session — Involuntary Medical Removal of Arthur Vance.
The text claimed that Arthur had suffered a violent psychological breakdown at his estate, had assaulted his fiancée, and was currently mentally incompetent to lead the company.
Julian had invoked Article Nine of the corporate charter, calling for an immediate vote at 8:30 AM to strip Arthur of all executive authority and appoint himself as acting chairman.
Arthur looked at the digital clock on the wall: 4:15 AM.
A cold, deadly smile curved Arthur's lips for the first time in two years.
"Julian thinks he's walking into a coronation," Arthur said softly, his eyes reflecting the blue glow of the laptop.
"Get my tailor to bring a fresh three-piece charcoal suit to the hospital by six."

"And Marcus... tell Thomas to bring the surveillance hard drives from the pool deck."
"We are going to give my brother the board meeting of his life."
