Chapter 13 - The Devil’s Bargain

By midday, the private medical suite inside the Vance mansion resembled an intensive care isolation ward.
Elena lay propped up against the pillows, hooked to two separate IV infusions delivering temporary neuro-stabilizers that barely managed to slow the spread of the synthetic poison.
Lily sat on the edge of the bed, holding her mother’s limp hand and softly singing a lullaby, trying to be brave, though large tears continuously slipped down her rosy cheeks.
Arthur stood just outside the glass partition, watching the monitor track Elena’s erratic heart rhythm, his mind calculating every brutal tactical scenario available to a man with billions of dollars and unlimited resolve.
His encrypted satellite phone buzzed against his chest with a private, unlisted frequency.
Arthur tapped his earpiece and answered with cold, deadly composure. "Vance."
"You look remarkably composed for a man whose beloved wife is drowning on dry land, Arthur," a smooth, cultured voice purred through the receiver.
The voice was deep, aristocratic, and utterly devoid of human empathy.
"Sebastian Cross," Arthur stated, his tone flat, even, and promising slaughter.
A low, dry chuckle resonated through the line. "I always admired your intellect, Arthur. You were always so much sharper than your pathetic elder brother. Julian was an impatient fool who bungled the simplest extraction in modern history."
"You touch one hair on my daughter's head, or let Elena suffer one second longer," Arthur whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the security guards nearby shudder, "and there is no corner of this earth where you can hide from me. I will burn your world to ash, Cross."
"Save the theatrical bravado for your boardroom minions, Arthur," Cross replied coldly. "You have thirty-six hours before the peptide destroys the motor cortex of Elena’s brain. Once that happens, even my antidote won't save her from becoming a vegetable."
"What do you want?"
"You know exactly what I want. Tonight at nine o'clock, the Houston Petroleum Heritage Gala is being hosted at the Sky Club penthouse on the top floor of the Heritage Tower."
"A public charity gala?" Arthur asked, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.
"I have always preferred grand stages," Cross said smoothly. "You will attend the gala alone. In your breast pocket, you will carry the cold-storage hardware drive containing the complete, unencrypted source code for Project Aegis."
"And the antidote?"
"I will be present at the gala, wearing a face you won't recognize," Cross replied with a mocking cadence. "When you deliver the drive to my courier inside the penthouse, I will personally hand you the synthetic auto-injector containing the TX-99 neutralizing enzyme."
"And if I involve federal authorities?" Arthur pressed.
"If Detective Ramirez or his badge-wearing cronies put a single surveillance van within two blocks of the Heritage Tower," Cross warned, his voice turning razor-sharp, "the courier will vanish, the antidote will be incinerated, and you can spend tomorrow morning watching your wife suffocate on her own tongue while your daughter screams."
The line went dead with a sharp, electronic click.
Arthur lowered the phone, his breathing slow and calculated, his mind running through the parameters of the trap.
Marcus stepped up beside him, speaking in a low murmur. "What did he say, boss?"
"He wants the Aegis quantum drive," Arthur said, turning toward the command terminal. "Tonight. Heritage Tower penthouse gala. He expects me to walk into his playground alone, unarmed, and handing over the crown jewels of American defense infrastructure."
"It's a slaughter box, Arthur," Marcus warned, his eyes dark with concern. "The Heritage Tower Sky Club has only two private express elevators, no external fire escape access, and the penthouse floor is enclosed in reinforced bulletproof glass. If Cross has his operatives staged there, you won't walk out alive, drive or no drive."
"He doesn't intend to let me walk out alive," Arthur agreed, unbuttoning his sleeves and rolling them up his muscular forearms. "Cross knows that as long as I draw breath, I will hunt him to the ends of the earth. He wants Aegis, he wants my death, and he wants Elena’s elimination to tie up every loose end."
"So what do we do?" Marcus asked.
Arthur looked through the glass window at Elena, who had managed to open her eyes and was smiling weakly at Lily as she stroked their daughter’s golden hair.
"We give Mr. Cross the show he's paying for," Arthur said, a grim, lethal smile curling his mouth. "Marcus, call our special operations logistics team at Vance Aerospace."
"What are you planning?"
"Cross thinks he controls the sky because he rented a penthouse," Arthur whispered, his eyes flashing with thunderous resolve. "He forgot that I built the communications grid that powers that entire city block."
"Get the backup Aegis drive loaded with our proprietary Trojan lockdown cipher," Arthur commanded. "And tell Ramirez to pull his marked cruisers back to the precinct."

"We aren't bringing police to this fight, Marcus."
"We're bringing an execution."
