Chapter 9 - The Reckoning with Travis

Before Hannah could speak, the glass terrace door swung open again.
A hotel security guard appeared, looking panicked. "Mr. Vale... I apologize for intruding, sir, but there’s a situation at the main valet entrance. A man broke through the barricades. He’s claiming to be Mrs. Vale’s family, and he’s causing a major disturbance."
Julian’s eyes instantly turned back to glacial steel. "Travis."
Hannah moved past Julian back into the warmth of the corridor. "Claire is still in town. If Travis is here, where is Noah?"
They took the private service elevator down to the ground floor. The doors opened to the hotel’s opulent foyer, where a chaotic scene had unfolded.
Travis stood in the center of the marble floor, his clothes soaked, holding a heavy tire iron. Two private security guards had their batons drawn, keeping him at bay, while high-society guests peered from the ballroom doors in horror.
"Hannah!" Travis roared, spotting her stepping out of the elevator behind Julian. "You think you can ruin my life? You think you can call your rich boyfriend to seize my trucks? I’ll tear this place apart!"
Hannah stepped forward, but Julian put an arm out, blocking her.
"Stay behind me," Julian ordered.
Julian stepped into the center of the foyer. The rain had plastered his white shirt to his frame, his formal suspenders framing his broad chest. He didn't look like an ordinary manager now. He looked like an apex predator who had stepped into his private hunting ground.
"Drop the iron, Vance," Julian said.
Travis sneered, raising the weapon. "You think because you got money you can take my business? I built that company with my bare hands! You stole my house!"
"You mortgaged your wife’s house to pay for your gambling debts in Dubuque," Julian said coldly, taking a slow step forward. "You defaulted on three commercial loans. You forged Claire’s signature on a home equity line. I didn't steal your life, Vance. You bankrupted it. I merely bought the scrap metal."
"I'll kill you!" Travis lunged forward, swinging the tire iron in a blind, drunken fury.
Hannah screamed.
Julian didn't flinch. In a movement so fast, so brutally efficient it defied comprehension, he stepped inside the arc of the swing. His left hand caught Travis’s wrist, twisting it inward until bone cracked. The tire iron clattered against the marble floor.
Before Travis could cry out, Julian’s right hand drove into the man’s solar plexus, followed by a sweep of his leg that brought Travis crashing down onto the stone with concussive force.
Julian planted one polished dress shoe onto Travis’s chest, pinning him to the floor. He leaned down, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper.
"The Kenosha police have already executed the search warrant on your storage unit," Julian said. "They found the unregistered firearms and the stolen industrial tools. You will be arraigned by sunrise. If you ever speak my wife’s name again, if you ever look in Noah’s direction, I will ensure that the rest of your natural life is spent in a state correctional facility three hundred miles from here. Do you understand me?"
Travis choked, his face white with terror, nodding frantically beneath the pressure of Julian’s shoe.
Julian lifted his foot and turned to the head of security. "Remove this trash. And call the District Attorney. Tell him Julian Vale expects no bail to be granted."
The security team dragged Travis away through the service doors.
The foyer was dead silent. Margaret Vale stood at the top of the grand stairs, watching her grandson with a look of supreme, unshakeable satisfaction.

Julian turned to Hannah. The violence in his frame had completely evaporated, replaced only by a quiet, raw vulnerability that made her chest ache.
