Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

The tension didn't dissipate; it thickened, settling over the ballroom like a suffocating fog.
Julian didn't answer her question immediately. He guided her through the crowd toward a private alcove flanked by heavy velvet drapery. His expression was completely composed, but Hannah could feel the rigid control in his muscles beneath his jacket.
"You shouldn't let people talk to you like that," he said, turning to face her in the shadow of the alcove.
"I was about to handle it myself!" Hannah whispered furiously. "I spent six months dealing with Travis Vance. A spoiled socialite doesn't frighten me, Julian! What frightens me is that you just threatened to destroy an entire corporation in front of two hundred people like you were swatting a fly!"
"It was an effective boundary," he said coolly.
"It was terrifying!" Hannah took a step closer, looking up into his pale, unyielding eyes. "A mid-level logistics manager doesn't short stocks to ruin families over an insult. A warehouse supervisor doesn't have private banking divisions liquidating predatory lenders on fifteen minutes' notice! Who are you?"
Julian gazed down at her. In the dim light of the alcove, the mask of the detached, ordinary husband began to slip, revealing the formidable, ruthless architect underneath.
"My grandmother told you I worked in logistics," he said quietly.
"Yes!"
"She wasn't lying. She merely omitted the scale."
Before Hannah could demand what that meant, the heavy curtain of the alcove was drawn back.
A man flanked by two burly men with earpieces stepped inside. He was an elderly man, weathered, commanding, wearing a tuxedo bearing the rosette of the French Legion of Honor.
"Mr. Vale," the man said, bowing his head with deep, unmistakable reverence.
Julian stepped back, his posture immediately assuming an imperial distance. "Governor. I was not aware you were attending this evening."
"I flew in from Chicago specifically to catch you before the closing bell on the shipping conglomerate merger," the Governor said, completely ignoring Hannah for a split second before registering her presence. He paused, his eyes widening slightly. "My apologies... is this Mrs. Vale?"
"It is," Julian said, his voice dropping into absolute authority. "Hannah, this is Governor Hayes."
Hannah felt her knees wobble. *The Governor.* A man whose face was on every news broadcast in the Midwest was bowing his head to her husband.
"An absolute honor, Mrs. Vale," Hayes said, extending a hand. "Your husband’s infrastructure initiative has saved three deep-water ports from bankruptcy this quarter alone. The entire Great Lakes corridor owes the Vale family an immense debt."
Hannah shook his hand automatically, her mind reeling, pieces of reality colliding and fracturing.
"We will speak on Monday, Hayes," Julian cut in, his tone dismissing the most powerful politician in the state with the casual ease of a man sending away a waiter. "Tonight is for my wife."
"Of course, Mr. Vale. Madam." The Governor bowed again and melted back into the gala.
Hannah turned back to Julian, her voice barely a thread of sound. "The Great Lakes corridor... infrastructure initiative..."
"Hannah," Julian murmured, reaching for her hand.
May you like
"Don't touch me," she breathed, stepping back out of the alcove into the blazing light of the ballroom.
