Chapter 28 - Welcoming Victoria

Spring returned to the Potomac with an explosion of white and pink blossoms, washing away the bitter winter and the ghosts of Arthur Carter's funeral. Arthur had been laid to rest in a quiet, unadorned cemetery outside Richmond. Neither Lucas nor I attended the public viewing; we had paid for the burial plot through an attorney to ensure he received a dignified resting place, but Eleanor was left to sit alone on the front pew, surrounded by empty folding chairs. Her reign of vanity was officially buried beneath six feet of Virginia earth.
In Alexandria, life was bursting forth with radiant, unstoppable joy.
On a warm Monday morning in mid-April, the labor suite on the fourth floor of Walter Reed was filled with the rhythmic sound of an electronic fetal heart monitor—rapid, steady, and strong.
I gripped Alexander’s hand with all the strength in my fingers, breathing through an intense, rolling contraction. Alexander was right beside me, wearing surgical scrubs over his broad shoulders, his forehead pressed against mine, his deep voice murmuring steady words of encouragement into my ear.
"You're doing incredible, Emily," Alexander whispered, his thumb wiping a bead of sweat from my temple. "One more push, darling. You've got this. Stay with me."
Dr. Katherine Morales, my close friend and Walter Reed’s chief of obstetrics, smiled from the foot of the bed. "Alright, Emily! Full dilation. On this next contraction, give me everything you have!"
I bore down, drawing upon the same well of unyielding stamina that had carried me through mass-casualty surgical shifts in foreign deserts. I pushed with everything in my soul—pushing past the pain, pushing past the scars of my youth, pushing into the dawn of a new life.
A sharp, lusty cry pierced the air.
The sound filled the sterile delivery room, richer and sweeter than any symphony ever composed.
"It’s a girl!" Dr. Morales announced triumphantly, lifting our daughter into the warm light. "A beautiful, healthy baby girl!"
Tears flowed freely down my cheeks as Dr. Morales placed the warm, crying bundle directly onto my bare chest. Alexander leaned over us, his broad chest heaving, openly weeping as he looked down at our daughter.
She had a shock of dark brown hair like her father’s, delicate rosebud lips, and tiny, perfect fingers that immediately reached out, curling tightly around Alexander’s index finger.
"Look at her, Alexander," I whispered through my tears, stroking the velvet softness of her cheek. "She’s here."
"Victoria Grace Hale," Alexander choked out, his voice overflowing with reverence as he kissed my forehead and then gently kissed our daughter’s tiny crown. "Welcome to the world, Victoria. You are safe. You are loved. Forever."
Two hours later, after Victoria was bathed and swaddled in a clean white blanket, the room door cracked open. Lucas and Chloe walked in, carrying their two-month-old son, Leo, wrapped in a pale blue fleece.
Lucas stopped at the edge of the bed, looking down at his newborn niece, his eyes glistening with profound emotion.
"She’s magnificent, Em," Lucas choked out, reaching down to gently touch Victoria’s blanket. "She looks just like you."

"Hold her, Uncle Lucas," I smiled, carefully transferring the bundle into his arms.
Lucas held Victoria against his chest, looking down at her peaceful face while Chloe held baby Leo beside him. The cycle of trauma, cruelty, and emotional mutilation that had haunted the Carter name for generations had been completely obliterated. In its place stood two siblings, two loving marriages, and two innocent children born into an unbreakable sanctuary of unconditional love.
