Chapter 18 - Lucas's Ultimatum

The fallout from the gala was swift, brutal, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours, news of Marcus Sterling’s public repudiation of Carter Developments leaked to the financial press. Secondary lenders called in their notes, and Arthur was forced to put their sprawling Virginia colonial mansion on the market to avoid criminal bankruptcy proceedings.
Two weeks later, Lucas arrived at his parents' house to collect the remainder of his personal belongings. The grand foyer, once bustling with florists and wedding coordinators, was now filled with cardboard moving boxes and appraisers cataloging antique furniture.
Arthur sat in the study, surrounded by half-empty whiskey glasses and legal eviction notices. Eleanor sat on the sofa, looking hollowed-out, her eyes sunken and red.
"Lucas," Eleanor whispered weakly as her son entered the room. "Thank God you're here. You have to speak to Chloe’s father. His bank can issue a secondary credit line to save the house. If we can just hold out until autumn—"
Lucas set a thick manila folder onto Arthur's mahogany desk. "Sign the transfer papers, Dad."
Arthur looked up, his speech slurred. "What... what papers?"
"The release forms for my trust fund and my severance from Carter Developments," Lucas said, his tone flat and emotionless. "An independent forensic accountant reviewed the company's ledger yesterday. You tried to siphon four hundred thousand dollars from my personal trust account last week to cover your margin call."
Arthur’s face drained of color. "Lucas... it was a temporary bridge loan! I was going to pay it back as soon as the land sold!"
"You tried to rob your own son to save your country club membership," Lucas said, his voice trembling with controlled fury. "Sign the documents, Dad. Or the accountant goes straight to the Securities and Exchange Commission this afternoon."
Arthur’s hands shook violently as he unscrewed his fountain pen and scrawled his signature across the bottom of the legal forms.
Eleanor burst into hysterical tears, clutching Lucas’s arm. "Lucas, no! You can't abandon us! Emily has already destroyed this family, and now you—"
Lucas violently pulled his arm away from her touch. "Emily didn't destroy this family, Mother. You did. You destroyed it with your narcissism, your cruelty, and your endless greed. Emily was the only one among us with real honor, and you treated her like garbage."
Lucas picked up the signed documents, slipping them safely into his briefcase.
"Chloe and I are moving to Alexandria," Lucas said, turning toward the door. "I’ve accepted an executive logistics position with a defense medical supplier affiliated with Walter Reed. We are building a life based on integrity, hard work, and family that actually loves one another."
"Lucas, please!" Eleanor wailed, reaching out from the couch. "Don't leave me with nothing!"

"You have Arthur, Mom," Lucas said without turning back. "You have the exact life you deserved."
The heavy oak door slammed shut, echoing like a gavel through the empty, ruined house.
