Chapter 35 - The Final Legal Demolition

The private conference room of Marcus Vance’s Boston affiliate firm was quiet, sterile, and entirely devoid of sentiment.
Preston sat slumped in a reinforced steel chair, his hands resting flat on the mahogany conference table. His cheap suit jacket was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his breathing shallow and rapid. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, who had flown in on the morning shuttle from our home city, alongside Arthur Briggs, the Chief Legal Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Correction’s Interstate Compact Bureau.
I was not present in the room. I had declined to attend. An engineer does not need to personally visit the scrap yard to oversee the recycling of defective metal; he trusts the machinery of the disposal facility.
Marcus laid a heavy, four-inch binder down onto the table with a sharp, resonant thud.
""Mr. Vance,"" Marcus began, his voice dripping with icy, professional finality. ""You are currently facing an emergency parole revocation warrant originating from the state of Indiana, accompanied by four counts of felony interstate stalking, child harassment, and aggravated violation of a protective order within a designated university safety zone.""
Preston’s hands began to shake violently. ""I didn't touch him! I didn't threaten him! I gave him a pen! It was a gift! A family gift! You can’t put a man in prison for giving his nephew a pen!""
""Under the interstate statutory provisions of the federal Violence Against Women and Children Protection Act,"" Arthur Briggs stated flatly, adjusting his spectacles, ""approaching a minor victim of a previous child endangerment conviction across state lines constitutes an automatic class-three felony. If we proceed with the formal indictment this afternoon, your parole in Indiana will be revoked instanter. You will serve the remaining seven years of your wire fraud sentence in a maximum-security state facility, followed consecutively by an additional five years in Massachusetts.""
Preston’s face drained of all color, turning the sickly shade of damp chalk. He covered his face with his trembling hands, a ragged, pathetic sob escaping his throat. ""Please... please, Marcus. Tell Harrison I’m sorry. Tell him I’ll never look at his family again. I have nothing. I have no money, no home, no one. Mom doesn't even know who I am anymore! She looked at me through the glass last month and asked if I was the orderly coming to change her sheets! Dad is dead! I have no one!""
Marcus leaned forward, his eyes cutting straight through Preston’s theatrical despair.
""Harrison Vance does not care about your apologies, Preston,"" Marcus said softly. ""Harrison Vance stopped thinking about you eight years ago. You are not a tragedy to this family; you are an administrative nuisance that is about to be permanently scrubbed from their blueprints.""
Marcus slid a single, three-page legal document across the table, accompanied by a heavy black rollerball pen.
""This is an irrevocable, lifetime Global Non-Molestation Covenant and Restrictive Territorial Agreement,"" Marcus explained. ""Under its terms, you will formally surrender all rights to ever enter the counties where Harrison, Chloe, Wyatt, and Harper reside or attend university. You will forfeit all future claims against any family estate, trust, or archival asset. You will agree to immediate, voluntary relocation to a monitored municipal jurisdiction in southern Illinois under the direct supervision of the interstate parole board.""
Preston looked up, his red-rimmed eyes wide with desperation. ""And if I sign?""
""If you sign,"" Marcus replied coldly, ""my client’s firm will agree to stay the Massachusetts criminal stalking charges, allowing you to complete your Indiana parole on supervised administrative probation without serving additional prison time. Furthermore, upon your verified relocation and thirty days of continuous, documented employment, our charitable foundation will disburse five hundred dollars a month directly to your designated municipal landlord to subsidize your basic housing voucher for twelve months. Not a penny goes to your hands. Not a single phone call will ever be accepted. If you violate a single millimeter of this agreement, the stay is lifted, and you will spend your thirties and forties in an iron cell.""
Preston stared at the paper. The realization that his brother had completely, mathematically solved him—reducing his existence to a monitored voucher and a permanent perimeter—shattered the last shred of his arrogant delusion.

With trembling, defeated fingers, Preston picked up the pen and signed his name on the line.
The old dynasty was officially extinct.
