Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Country Club

Three days before the gala, Eleanor Carter held court at the Dominion Golf & Country Club in McLean. The afternoon sun filtered through the grand conservatory windows, illuminating crystal teacups, silver trays of cucumber sandwiches, and a circle of Virginia’s most discerning matriarchs. Aunt Marlene sat to Eleanor’s right, basking in the reflected glow of perceived status.
For months, Eleanor had maintained a tight lid on the events of Lucas’s wedding, but society circles were notoriously porous. Whispers had spread that Lucas’s sister had vanished from the rehearsal dinner, that the wedding party had experienced an explosive argument, and that the groom had uninvited his own mother from the evening reception.
"Eleanor, darling," purred Evelyn Vance, whose husband sat on the board of the Northern Virginia Historical Society. "We noticed Emily wasn't in any of the wedding photographs published in the town journal. We were all so curious. Is she still off with that... charming little reserve outfit of hers?"
Eleanor didn't miss a beat. She offered a practiced, tragic smile, lifting her porcelain cup with practiced delicacy. "Oh, Evelyn, you know how painful it is for a mother. Emily has always had a difficult temperament. She’s working as an administrative nurse in a temporary clinic somewhere in the countryside. Arthur and I offered to set her up with a clinic in town, but she insisted on running off. She has always resented Lucas’s success, so she simply chose not to attend."
Marlene chimed in, swirling her tea. "A complete embarrassment, really. Can you imagine choosing cheap military gear over a Vera Wang bridesmaid gown? Some girls simply lack refinement."
The women murmured in sympathetic agreement, nodding their heads at Eleanor's supposed burden.
Neither woman realized that Lucas had just entered the conservatory. He was dressed in a sharp business suit, having arrived to hand-deliver financial documents that Arthur had desperately requested. He stood frozen near the arched entryway, his fists clenched as his mother’s deceitful words echoed through the room.
Lucas stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking sharply on the polished marble. "That is an absolute lie, Mother."
The conservatory went dead silent. Eleanor’s teacup clattered against its saucer, spilling amber liquid across the white linen.
"Lucas!" Eleanor gasped, her face flushing crimson. "What are you doing here?"
Lucas walked straight to the table, looking down at his mother with cold disdain. "Emily is a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps. She is a trauma surgeon who saved lives in combat, and she didn't skip my wedding—you drove her away because you cut her uniform to shreds with fabric shears out of pure, pathetic jealousy."
A collective gasp swept through the conservatory. Evelyn Vance’s eyes widened in horror.
"Lucas, you are being hysterical—" Marlene began, but Lucas cut her off with a look of pure disgust.

"Stop lying to your friends, Mom. You are bankrupt of decency, and if you keep slandering my sister, I will make sure everyone in this county knows the real reason you were banned from my reception."
Lucas dropped Arthur’s file onto the table, turned on his heel, and walked out, leaving Eleanor sitting among her horrified peers as her carefully constructed façade crumbled to dust.
