Chapter 12 - The Devil in Bellevue

The ICU ward at Bellevue Hospital felt like a military outpost under siege. Uniformed officers flanked every doorway, their hands resting on their sidearms. The rhythmic, mechanical hiss of a ventilator echoed down the sterile hallway.
Inside room 402, Victoria Vance lay strapped to a hospital bed, surrounded by telemetry monitors.
Her glamorous platinum blonde hair was matted with sweat; the radiant, intoxicating beauty she had used to bewitch my father had rotted away, replaced by the hollow, gaunt pallor of a poisoned rat. An IV drip pushed antitoxin into her bruised arm.
When I entered the room, the heavy steel door clicking shut behind me, her bloodshot eyes fluttered open. She saw me, and a hideous, broken sound scraped past her parched lips—a laugh that sounded like dry autumn leaves scraping against stone.
"Look at you... Evelyn," Victoria rasped, her voice reduced to a harsh whisper. "The little princess... playing CEO."
I pulled a metal chair over to the side of her bed and sat down. I didn't show anger. I didn't show triumph. I looked at her with the clinical, merciless detachment of a surgeon preparing to amputate infected flesh.
"Your husband tried to kill my father last night, Victoria," I said calmly. "He failed. And then he tried to kill you yesterday afternoon in the federal holding cell."
Victoria’s chest heaved. A monitor beeped with an elevated heart rate. "Nikolai... was cleaning up loose ends. That's what we do. We don't fail."
"He abandoned you," I leaned closer, letting the words carve into her pride. "You spent two years sleeping in my father’s bed, smiling at our dinner parties, performing like a trained pet. And the moment the plan shattered, Nikolai sent an assassin to pump neurotoxin into your air vent. He left you here to choke on your own saliva while he and your sister Julianna take Triton Capital and sail away on your fortune."
Victoria’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of genuine terror piercing through her narcotics-induced haze. "Julianna? Julianna is... she wouldn't..."
"Julianna filed the SEC complaint this morning," I lied with absolute conviction, knowing her family was built on a foundation of mutual betrayal. "She invoked the morality clause to claim Arthur’s shares under Triton Capital. The paperwork has her name on it. Not yours. Not Nikolai's. Julianna played you both, Victoria. She let you take the fall so she could emerge as the legitimate corporate savior of Ashford Global."
Victoria began to hyperventilate. The cardiac monitor screamed a warning.
"She... she promised me Paris!" Victoria sobbed, pure, venomous rage boiling to the surface. "She swore if I secured Arthur's signatures on the logistics contracts, I would get forty percent of Triton! She played me! The little bitch played me!"
"Give me the private server encryption key, Victoria," I commanded, pulling out my phone, displaying the secure command portal Marcus had prepared. "Give me the cryptographic ledger proving Triton Capital was funded with laundered cartel money. Give me Julianna, and I will personally have the federal prosecutor move you to an undisclosed witness protection facility before Nikolai finishes what he started."
Victoria stared at me, hatred and self-preservation warring behind her bloodshot eyes.
"Behind the wall panel... in the master suite at the Ashford townhouse on 74th Street," Victoria whispered, tears carving tracks through the grime on her cheeks. "There is a biometric safe. Code is 0-9-1-4-Arthur. My anniversary with your pathetic father. The master ledgers are on a cold-storage drive inside."
I stood up, sliding my phone into my pocket.
"Thank you, Victoria," I said coolly.
"Wait!" she cried out, her manicured fingers clawing at the hospital sheets. "You promised! You promised you'd protect me from Nikolai!"
I stopped at the heavy door, turning back to look at the woman who had tried to murder my father and ruin my family.

"I promised to ask the prosecutor," I said softly. "I never said he would say yes."
