Chapter 11 - The Corporate Guillotine

At 9:00 AM the following morning, while my father lay stabilized in a secure suite at Mount Sinai Hospital surrounded by four armed federal agents, the New York Stock Exchange opened to absolute pandemonium.

Ashford Global Industries—the conglomerate my grandfather had founded and my father had spent forty years building into a sixty-billion-dollar titan of clean energy and infrastructure—was undergoing a catastrophic, unprecedented short attack.

I stood in the Ashford Global boardroom on the 52nd floor of our Manhattan skyscraper, staring at the floor-to-ceiling financial terminals. The stock ticker was flashing a blinding, continuous red: **AGI -18%... -24%... -31%.**

"What the hell is happening, David?" I demanded of David Sterling, my father’s Chief Financial Officer, who looked as if he was about to vomit into his silk tie.

"It’s an engineered decapitation, Evelyn!" Sterling panicked, wiping sweat from his forehead with a trembling hand. "Forty minutes ago, an anonymous whistle-blower dossier was released simultaneously to the SEC, Bloomberg, and the Department of Justice. It claims that Arthur Ashford has been secretly funneling illicit Russian capital through our offshore infrastructure projects for the past five years!"

"That's a lie!" I shouted, slamming my palm onto the polished glass conference table. "Victoria Vance and Nikolai manufactured those transactions! They used my father’s forged digital signatures when they were running Vanguard Maritime Logistics!"

"It doesn't matter if it’s a lie!" Sterling screamed back, his voice cracking with hysteria. "The SEC just announced an emergency trading halt pending an investigation into Arthur's personal accounts! The board of directors is convening an emergency session in forty-five minutes. There is already a motion on the floor to strip your father of his chairmanship and seize his voting shares under the corporate morality clause!"

My mind raced through the labyrinthine mechanics of the trap.

Nikolai Vance knew he couldn't beat us through a simple home invasion. He had planned this secondary strike months ago. If the board invoked the morality clause and forced Arthur Ashford out, the voting control of Ashford Global would default to the senior hedge fund holding the largest minority stake: *Triton Capital Management*.

"Marcus," I called out over my shoulder. Marcus was hunched over a laptop in the corner of the boardroom, fingers flying across the keys. "Who controls Triton Capital?"

"Digging through the blind trusts now," Marcus muttered, his brow furrowed. "It’s a labyrinth of Delaware LLCs and Cypriot holding entities..." He suddenly stopped. He looked up at me, his face dead white.

"Evelyn," Marcus said quietly. "Triton Capital isn't owned by Nikolai."

"Then who?"

"Victoria's estranged sister," Marcus revealed. "Julianna Vance. The corporate attorney who represented the firm during their initial public offering three years ago."

The air left my lungs.

Victoria wasn't just a seductress. She and Nikolai were the kinetic muscle of a family syndicate that had infiltrated Ashford Global from the very inside, using legal loopholes, corporate mergers, and psychological warfare to prepare a hostile takeover.

"They're not trying to steal thirty million dollars," I whispered, the terrifying scale of the conspiracy finally clicking into place. "They're executing a corporate coup to seize a sixty-billion-dollar empire."

I grabbed my coat.

"Where are you going?" Sterling called out in terror.

May you like

"To the Federal Detention Center," I replied, my eyes burning with lethal clarity. "Victoria Vance is the only one who holds the decryption keys to Triton Capital. And she is going to give them to me today."
