Chapter 29 - The Bloodline’s Choice

“She is not your daughter,” I said, stepping into the harsh light, stopping twenty feet away from the monster who had engineered our tragedy.
Clara’s lips were now a faint, bruised purple. The portable monitor clipped to my belt let out a slow, rhythmic death-knell: *CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE IN 45 MINUTES.*
“Call her whatever you wish, my dear,” Lucian said, holding out a gloved hand. “Her genetic markers are mine. The thirty billion dollars in Geneva belong to her bloodline. Hand her to me, and I will place my thumb upon the biometric scanner of Arthur’s briefcase. I will give you the stabilizing compound. She will live.”
“And Dante?” I demanded, keeping my weapon steady, my finger curled tight around the trigger.
Lucian glanced back at Dante, chained and bleeding to death against the pillar. “Dante is an obsolete variable. He dies tonight. You and the boy, Mateo, may take five million dollars and disappear into South America. That is the only mercy you will receive.”
“Lena!” Dante roared, the veins in his neck bulging like thick ropes as he pulled against the iron chains, ripping his wounded flesh against the metal. “Don’t do it! Do not give her to him! She’s better off dead than in their hands!”
“Shut up, Dante!” I screamed, tears blinding my vision. “Look at her! Look at our daughter! She’s dying in my arms!”
I looked down at Clara. Her tiny, delicate eyelashes fluttered weakly. Her small fingers brushed against my thumb with the faintest whisper of a grip. She didn’t know about billions of dollars, or ancient European syndicates, or forged genetic vaults. She only knew the warmth of my chest, the sound of my voice, and the agonizing lack of oxygen in her tiny, fragile lungs.
“Tick-tock, Lena,” Lucian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, seductive whisper. “Thirty minutes. Her heart is already beginning to fibrillate. Place the girl on the table, take your son, and walk away.”
I lowered the gun.
Julianna let out a triumphant gasp. Lucian’s guards slowly relaxed their stances, lowering their assault rifles.
“Lena, please!” Dante sobbed, the mighty billionaire weeping openly, straining against the chains until the links cut through the flesh of his wrists, dripping blood onto the freezing floor. “Lena, don’t let them win!”
Slowly, step by agonizing step, I walked toward the steel examination table in the center of the hangar. I set the titanium cryo-case onto the metal surface. Then, with trembling hands, I laid Clara beside it.
Lucian smiled, stepping forward with an air of absolute triumph. He tossed his silver cane aside, peeling off his right leather glove. He pressed his thumb onto the biometric reader of the titanium briefcase.
*BEEP.*
*BIOMETRIC KEY CONFIRMED: LUCIAN VANCE (GENOME MATCH: 99.8%). OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED.*
The pneumatic seals of the briefcase hissed, releasing a plume of cold nitrogen vapor. Inside lay three glass ampoules of clear, luminescent gold serum—the biological antidote.

“Good girl,” Lucian whispered, reaching for Clara with his bare hand. “Now, she belongs to the syndicate.”
