Chapter 26 - The Shadows Beneath the River

The aqueduct smelled of stagnant river mud, rust, and centuries of industrial decay.

Water splashed up to my knees as Marcus and I pushed forward through the pitch-black tunnel, guided only by the narrow beam of a tactical flashlight. My chest burned with exhaustion, but every ragged breath was measured against Clara’s condition.

Her skin felt cool—too cool.

“Marcus, she’s slipping,” I gasped, pausing against the slimy brick wall of the drainage arch to adjust Clara’s blanket. “Her breathing is shallower.”

Marcus checked the wrist monitor connected to her chest probe. The digital readout was blinking red: *TIME TO SYSTEMIC SHOCK: 18 HOURS, 14 MINUTES.*

“The metabolic inhibitor is accelerating due to the cold,” Marcus said grimly, stripping off his heavy woolen overcoat and wrapping it around both infants. “We have to reach the truck. The utility vehicle has a portable neonatal warming unit and the satellite uplink to track Lucian’s transport.”

“How did Lucian Vance stay hidden for thirty years?” I asked, my voice echoing hollowly through the damp cavern as we trudged forward. “Dante is the most powerful man in the Midwest. How could his own uncle operate in the shadows right beneath him?”

“Because Arthur Vance was terrified of him,” Marcus said, leading me up a rusted spiral staircase toward a storm drain outlet. “Arthur was a businessman. Lucian was a butcher. Lucian ran the European syndicate’s biological black sites. When the Castigliones wanted an untraceable genetic line that carried both Vance Global’s corporate charter assets and their own offshore banking keys, Lucian volunteered his own genetic material.”

“To create a child who could inherit everything,” I breathed, the sheer corporate depravity turning my stomach. “A child who would legally bridge the Vance empire and the Castiglione syndicate.”

“Exactly,” Marcus grunted, pushing against a heavy iron grate at the top of the stairs. “Mateo inherits the American Vance corporate trust. But Clara... Clara was engineered to be the key that unlocks forty billion dollars in Swiss sovereign bonds held by the syndicate. That’s why they won’t kill her. But they will kill Dante, they will kill you, and they will raise her in an ivory tower in Geneva as an obedient biological figurehead.”

With a heavy heave, Marcus shoved the grate aside.

The cold night air hit my face like a slap. We emerged into an alley behind an abandoned grain elevator along the south branch of the Chicago River. Parked fifty yards away beneath the skeletal framework of an old crane was the armored utility truck Dante had prepared.

Suddenly, two figures stepped out from the deep shadows beside the vehicle.

They weren’t wearing tactical gear. They wore tailored black suits and long cashmere overcoats. And standing between them was a woman holding a small silver atomizer—the unmistakable scent of gardenia blooming instantly across the freezing winter wind.

Julianna Castiglione.

She lifted her red veil, revealing porcelain skin, blood-red lips, and eyes the color of winter frost.

“Welcome back to the surface, Lena,” Julianna said with a cold, predatory smile. “I’m afraid Dante won’t be joining us tonight. His uncle has already settled their family debt.”
