Chapter 9 - The Full Confession

Back at the Silverwood Police Department, under the harsh fluorescent lights of Interrogation Room B, Eleanor Hayes sat with her head bowed in her hands. The adrenaline of the chase had completely worn off, leaving behind the hollow shell of a woman broken by her own obsession and mental deterioration.

Sitting across from her, Detective Miller slid a thick folder across the steel table, alongside the comprehensive toxicological report faxed directly from Silverwood General Hospital.

“The lab results are in, Eleanor,” Miller said quietly, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only the heavy weight of professional disgust. “The compound you were synthesizing wasn't a cure. It was an experimental paralytic agent that you modified using unregulated industrial chemicals from your old lab. You weren't stabilizing her; you were slowly shutting down her central nervous system.”

Eleanor didn't look up. Hot tears leaked through her fingers, dampening the metal table.

“The tremors… they started right after my husband passed away,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I couldn't work anymore. I couldn't afford the clinic visits. When Mia started showing the early signs—slight muscle weakness in her ankles—I panicked. I thought if I could isolate the stabilization proteins in a controlled environment, I could reverse it before the doctors locked her away in some sterile institutional ward.”

“By locking her in a bedroom and injecting her with experimental neurotoxins?” Miller challenged sharply. “You terrified her, Eleanor. You paralyzed her lower body, and you forced a six-year-old child to watch over you while you lost your grip on reality.”

“I loved her,” Eleanor sobbed, her shoulders shaking violently as the full, unvarnished horror of her actions finally crashed down upon her. “I only ever wanted to keep her with me... to keep her safe from the world that took everything else I loved.”

“Well, your daughter is safe now,” Miller said, closing the folder with a sharp snap that echoed in the quiet room. “She’s receiving full medical treatment at the hospital, and the toxins are being safely flushed out of her system. But you will never lay a hand on her again.”

As two uniformed officers stepped into the room to escort Eleanor to holding, the paperwork for her arraignment was finalized. Charges of aggravated child abuse, reckless endangerment, and illegal pharmaceutical manufacturing were formally filed. The dark, hidden secrets of 412 Elmwood Lane had been dragged out into the harsh light of justice, but the most important question remained: could little Mia ever recover from the physical and emotional scars left behind by the mother she trusted?
