Chapter 10 - A New Dawn in Silverwood

Three weeks later, the autumn chill of Silverwood gave way to the crisp, bright promise of late October. The leaves outside the windows of the pediatric ward of Silverwood General Hospital blazed in brilliant shades of amber and gold, casting a warm, comforting light across Room 214.
Little Mia sat propped up against a mountain of fluffy pillows, wearing a bright yellow sweater and a wide, beaming smile. The rigid paralysis that had locked her legs in place weeks ago was entirely gone, replaced by healthy, active movement. With the expert care of Dr. Vance, the tireless nursing of Diane, and weeks of specialized physical therapy, the toxic agents had been completely purged from her system.
Today, however, wasn't about medical charts or physical therapy sessions. Today was about family.
The door swung open, and a kind-faced, middle-aged couple stepped into the room—Aunt Sarah and Uncle Mark, Mia’s maternal aunt and uncle who had rushed across state lines as soon as the authorities contacted them.
“Look at this little sunshine!” Aunt Sarah cried out happily, rushing over to the bed and sweeping Mia up into a warm, fierce embrace that made the little girl giggle with genuine delight.
“Are you ready to come home with us, champ?” Uncle Mark asked, holding up a brand-new, brightly colored bicycle helmet and a stuffed teddy bear that put her old, worn-out bear to shame. “We’ve got a big backyard, a golden retriever puppy, and a bedroom all painted in your favorite shade of blue.”
“Can I bring my crayons?” Mia asked brightly, her eyes shining with excitement.
“All the crayons in the world,” Sarah whispered, kissing the top of her head with tears of relief glistening in her eyes.
Standing quietly in the doorway, watching the heartwarming scene unfold, Nurse Diane Foster wiped a stray tear from her cheek and smiled. Beside her, paramedic Noah Blake rested his shoulder against the doorframe, letting out a long breath of quiet satisfaction.
