Chapter 7 - The Public Unraveling

The shock wave of Clara’s announcement tore through the grand ballroom like a lightning strike. Whispers erupted into a deafening roar of astonishment as wealthy executives, journalists, and corporate rivals scrambled to piece together the unbelievable reality unfolding before them.

At Table 1, Julian scrambled to his feet, his chair screeching loudly against the polished wooden floor. His face had gone from pale red to a ghostly, sickly white.

“Clara! Have you lost your mind? Get off that stage right now!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he completely forgot where he was, shattering the polished demeanor he had worked all evening to project. “What kind of sick game are you playing? You don’t own Sterling Investment Group! You’re—you’re just my wife! You were washing dishes in the kitchen an hour ago!”

The entire ballroom went dead silent at his outburst. Hundreds of heads snapped from Clara on the stage down to Julian, their expressions shifting from shock to profound disgust as they realized the sheer magnitude of his arrogance and ignorance.

Clara did not flinch. She simply looked down at him with an expression of supreme, unbothered pity.

“Am I, Julian?” Clara asked into the microphone, her voice carrying effortlessly across the hall. “Let’s remind everyone in this room what you told me before you left for this gala tonight. You told me to stay home and finish the dishes because you needed to look like a successful man—not someone burdened with a wife who didn't measure up.”

A collective wave of gasps and murmurs rippled through the audience. Several high-profile female executives in the front rows crossed their arms, glaring daggers at Julian.

“You reminded me that before marrying you, I lived above a print shop, wore thrift-store dresses, and drove an old, sputtering car,” Clara continued, her tone calm, measured, and devastatingly precise. “You looked me in the eye and proudly declared: ‘Everything you have exists because of me.’ Do you remember saying that, Julian?”

Julian stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, unable to utter a single coherent syllable. Sweat beaded visibly on his forehead, staining his pristine collar.

Victoria grabbed his arm, her voice shaking with panic. “Julian, shut her up! Tell security to get her down from there! She’s lying, she’s crazy—she’s just a washed-up housewife!”

Before Julian could even respond, the massive high-definition screens mounted on either side of the stage suddenly flickered to life. The glowing Sterling Investment Group logo vanished, replaced instantly by official corporate financial ledgers, wire transfer receipts, and legal documents.

Highlighted in giant bold letters on the screens were the exact words: VANCE ENTERPRISES: AUDIT & FRAUD INVESTIGATION REPORT.

Below the heading, the screens displayed a detailed breakdown of millions of dollars in embezzled funds funneled directly into a secretive offshore shell company—registered legally under Victoria’s maiden name.
