Chapter 2 - Beneath the Estate

Clara moved away from the kitchen sink with a steady, purposeful stride. The sprawling Westchester estate had been purchased under a blind trust three years ago, a property Julian bragged about buying with his own corporate bonuses. In reality, Clara had paid for every brick, every polished marble floorboard, and every sprawling acre of land. But the house held secrets Julian’s inflated ego had prevented him from ever discovering.
She walked out of the kitchen and down the long, dimly lit hallway toward the eastern wing of the mansion, where the air grew cooler and the hum of high-end machinery vibrated faintly through the floorboards. She entered the private wine cellar, rows upon rows of rare, vintage bottles resting in custom mahogany racks.
Stopping before a particularly dusty section near the back corner, Clara reached out and grasped the neck of an antique 1982 Bordeaux—a bottle worth more than a luxury sedan. With a practiced twist, she pulled it forward.
Instead of coming free, the bottle acted as a mechanical lever. A soft, pneumatic hiss echoed through the cellar as a heavy section of the stone-textured wall clicked and slid smoothly to the side, revealing a hidden alcove bathed in the cool blue glow of an advanced biometric security panel.
Clara pressed her right thumb against the glass scanner. A soft green light blinked twice, accompanied by a melodic chime. Access granted.
A concealed door swung inward, revealing a sleek, private elevator lined with brushed steel and dark glass. This was a private subterranean transit shaft Julian had never known existed, built during the estate's extensive renovations to connect her private corporate underground network directly to her residential quarters.
She stepped inside, and the heavy doors closed soundlessly. The elevator descended smoothly, plunging dozens of feet beneath the bedrock of the estate before coming to a gentle halt.
When the doors opened, Clara stepped out into a high-tech command center that looked straight out of a classified intelligence agency. The sprawling subterranean office was illuminated by a massive, curved wall of high-definition monitors displaying real-time financial markets, encrypted global communications feeds, and confidential legal documents. The ambient hum of supercomputers filled the room, keeping the atmosphere cool and crisp.
Dominating the central display wall was the glowing corporate logo of Sterling Investment Group—the very entity Julian was desperately trying to impress at tonight's gala in Manhattan.
Clara walked across the polished dark-metal floor and approached her primary executive desk. She picked up a secure, encrypted satellite phone resting on the matte-black surface.
“Yes, Ms. Sterling,” answered the crisp, professional voice of Arthur Vance—no relation to Julian, despite the surname—her chief legal officer and the man who managed the day-to-day operations of her vast financial empire.
“Arthur,” Clara said, her voice steady and razor-sharp. “Are the final asset audits for Vance Enterprises fully compiled?”
“Every single page, Madam,” Arthur replied immediately, sensing the shift in tone. “And let me tell you, what we found is far worse than we initially anticipated. Julian hasn't just been unfaithful in his marriage; he’s been committing corporate fraud on a massive scale.”
Clara narrowed her eyes, leaning against the edge of the desk. “Walk me through it.”

For nine months, while Julian believed his wife was entirely occupied with household chores and quiet isolation, Clara’s forensic accountants had been quietly auditing the inner workings of Vance Enterprises. They had uncovered a labyrinth of suspicious wire transfers, heavily altered corporate invoices, and recurring, multi-million-dollar payments funneled directly into a secretive offshore shell company.
And the name on the registration papers of that shell company belonged to none other than Victoria—under her maiden name.
