Chapter 22 - THE EMPTY CRYPT BENEATH OAKLAWN

The silence inside Sterling Manor was heavier than the storm outside.
Christian descended the sweeping spiral staircase one slow step at a time, Julian trailing two paces behind him like an unyielding shadow. Owen stood at the base of the stairs, a Glock 19 drawn and held at the low-ready position, his broad shoulders squared against the mahogany double doors that had just swung open.
The woman stood in the threshold. The smell of cold ozone, wet earth, and an unmistakable, vintage scent—Guerlain’s Mitsouko—drifted into the marble entryway. It was the fragrance that still lingered faintly in the cedar-lined closets of the abandoned master wing.
"Lower the weapon, Owen," the woman said. Her voice was not the frail rasp of an invalid; it was low, resonant, and dripping with aristocratic venom. "Your father was smart enough to know that a Sterling guard never aims at the hand that funds his pension. You have his jawline, but clearly not his intelligence."
Owen didn't lower the gun. "State your identity. The biometric lock on the gate was keyed to a deceased individual."
"I am the individual," she said calmly, peeling off her wet kidskin gloves finger by finger. Beneath the leather, her hands were immaculate, unspotted by liver marks, the skin unnervingly smooth for a woman who should have been seventy-two. "And you, Christian... you look so much like Arthur when he realized his empire was built on quicksand."
Christian stopped at the landing, his eyes raking over her. "Eleanora Vance is dead. Her death certificate is registered with the State of New York. Her vault is sealed in Oaklawn Cemetery."
"Then go open it," she replied with a cold, terrifying smirk. "The ground is soft tonight, Christian. Take a shovel. Take your little pet auditor with you. Dig up the sanctified earth where you wept every anniversary for three decades. See what you find beside the rosewood."
"Why are you here?" Christian demanded, his voice cracking against the cavernous foyer. "After Clara’s fraud collapsed—after everything—why now?"
"Clara was a minor nuisance. A third-rate socialite with an off-the-shelf silicone womb who thought she could swindle a multi-generational blood trust," the woman scoffed, tossing her wet gloves onto an antique console table. "She was the bait. Arthur and I needed to know if our primary investment was capable of surviving an internal hemorrhage."
Julian stepped around Christian, his dark gaze locking onto the woman. "Arthur isn't with you. The telemetry on the plane said Buenos Aires. He's connected to life support."
The woman's gaze flicked to Julian, and for the first time, her icy composure fractured. Her nostrils flared, a glint of genuine, possessive malice surfacing in her pale green eyes.
"You always were too sharp, Little Number Two," she whispered. "Arthur’s lungs are failing. The Argentine doctors have kept him alive for twenty-five years on synthetic marrow and our money. But the clock ran out. That is why the gates opened. The vault in Buenos Aires requires two living biometric keys to unlock the secondary trust: the firstborn son..." She turned her gaze back to Christian. "...and the backup."
"A backup?" Christian felt the room spin. "Julian is my brother's son. He’s my nephew!"

The woman laughed—a dry, rattling sound that died instantly in the cold air. "Go to Oaklawn, Christian. Unearth the vault. Before you accuse your mother of cruelty, look at what your father buried in my place."
